I know that there is a limit to the value of the prize that we can accept, i think around £500, so we don't loose our amatuer status. And that this applies to GUI/Club sanctioned events.

But does this apply to classics?

Played in one recently and the prizes were definately worth more than that.
From what i could see, 1st prize was a TV and a watch, there were weekends away, sets of titleist irons (AP1's), an Apple laptop, etc.

    What do you think?

I think the limit is €750 and it doesn't matter if it's a classic or a regular golf comp. prizes shouldn't exceed that limit.

No, it's currently £500 sterling which I suppose only is about €650 with the current exchange rate.

Also, who decides the value of the prize, is it the cost price or the retail price, there is a big difference......

From the Rules of Amateur Status www.randa.org

    3-2. General
An amateur golfer must not accept a prize (other than a symbolic prize) or prize voucher of retail value in excess of £500 or the equivalent, or such a lesser figure as may be decided by the Governing Body. This limit applies to the total prizes or prize vouchers received by an amateur golfer in any one competition or series of competitions, excluding any hole-in-one prize (see Rule 3-2b). (EDIT BY SLUMPED = LIMIT IN IRELAND IS €750)

    b. Hole-in-One Prizes
The limits prescribed in Rule 3-2a apply to a prize for a hole-in-one. However, such a prize may be accepted in addition to any other prize won in the same competition.

    c. Exchanging Prizes
An amateur golfer must not exchange a prize or prize voucher for cash.
Exception: An amateur golfer may submit a prize voucher to a national, regional, state or county union or association and thereafter be reimbursed from the value of that voucher for expenses incurred in participating in a golf competition, provided the reimbursement of such expenses is permitted under Rule 4-2.

Note 1: The responsibility to prove the retail value of a particular prize rests with the Committee in charge of the competition.

Note 2: It is recommended that the total value of prizes in a gross competition, or each division of a handicap competition, should not exceed twice the prescribed limit in an 18-hole competition, three times in a 36-hole competition, five times in a 54-hole competition and six times in a 72-hole competition.

I saw in a mag this/last months issue that it was £300 and the source was randa.org so I think I will have to email them and let them know they are wrong on it.

Does anyone know of people who have won a car for a hole-in-one and being faced with the decision as to whether they should accept the car, thus losing their amateur status?? Not sure that many people would turn down a car!!
