Engagement Presents???

Two of my close friends just got engaged (to each other, not two seperate couples), and a lot of our group have been talking about what to get them for their engagement. I was just going to give them a congratulations card, I never thought you were supposed to give gifts for the engagement, just the wedding??? They are the first couple we know who are getting married out of our group and I don't want to be the only one who doesn't get them something, but I acutally haven't a clue what to get or how much to spend!! Should I just stick a 50note in the card or what?? I don't want to offend them, I don't even know if they're expecting anything!

What do people think of this?? Is it the norm??

I dont think its the norm at all. I got engaged two years ago and nobody got me anything !!

It never even crossed my mind at the time, to be honest.

A card with 0 in it will do !! Don't get sucked in !!

when i got engaged i didnt get anything so dont worry but if you want to get something a bottle of bubbly to celebrate

No present needed just a card wishing them the best for the future. If you want to buy them something a bottle of champagne is nice.

No pressie needed - we had a engagement party last year and apart from my/his parents - we didn't get or expect any pressies. we did get a good few cards and some nice bottle of bubbles last that date

When myself and the OH got engaged, we had a party for our friends and some relatives. We weren't expecting anything but got a couple of things, mainly bottles of wine and champagne. We also got a really nice cook book, a pair of silver candlesticks and a crystal to hang in our window.

But honestly, we were amazed that people brought something at all!

Got engaged 2 weeks ago and am not not expectign presents. Got a couple of gifts and loads of cards with really nice messages in them. worth more than any present:)

When we got engaged we were given quite a lot of presents which we didn't expect. We were really touched by the lovely presents we were given and the obvious thought that went into them, however some friends did then feel pressured into buying us something if they were there when other people gave us presents. I was just delighted to get the cards and am still reassuring some friends 5 months on that I didn't want or expect anything!

When two close friends of mine got engaged, I found a lovely black and white photo I had taken of them on holiday the year before, trimmed it down and put it into one of those glass photo frames that come in a wooden base, they thought it was lovely but personal as well
