Cinema...how to fix it

While reading a new thread about someone bringing a baby into the cinema, I had an idea.

I don't go to the cinema anymore for reasons like that above, but a club could sort this out.

It may already be there, but most cinema clubs tend to be arthouse films or critically acclaimed stuff (IFI etc.) and don't show the blockbusters.

Here's my pitch: a cinema club, run by a few people. Members get access to all the new releases as anyone else but no
    • mobile phones
    • children
    • talking
    • etc.
No extra fee necessary, but if you break the rules - one warning.

Break them twice and you're out.

I can see many returning to the cinema if they knew this was the atmosphere they would be in and I reckon a lot of cinemas would be very grateful to have this kind of audience guaranteed week in - week out.

Thoughts on how to organise this and whether anything like it exists at the moment?

    :)

Most cinemas only care about one thing....$$$$$$$'s and as many of them as they can get.

You mention mobile phones, i was actually gonna start a thread on this earlier.

WHen it says swith your phone off.....it means switch your phone OFF, not put it on fecking silent so you can check text messages quietly.

Ive found myself geting really annoyed lately when a mobile phone screen catches the corner of my vision during a film, and i cant get it out of my head for the duration

Suggestions to make the cinema experience less obnoxious

-get rid of popcorn....it smells like sh*t and makes an annoying noise

-eject people who hold conversations aloud during the film (that includes a certain type of movie buff who discusses the film with their friend whilst the film is in progress)

-have a universal maximum sound volume

I rarely go to the cinema anymore but I remember one evening myself,my bro and 2 friends went to see Blade 2 when it was just released. The cinema was packed and in the seats in front of us there was approx 10 to 15 Spanish students. From the moment the opening credits rolled they started jabbering like Mexicans at a taco sale until about 20 minutes in my bro jumped out his seat and roared at them "shut the f**k up"
The entire cinema cheered and clapped him and there wasnt a peep out of those pesky critters for the rest of the movie.

Back on topic I dont know of anywhere like that aside from the IFI.Personally it doesnt bother me as blockbusters aint my thang but I do sympathise with people that want to go and watch a movie in comfort and without distraction from idiots.I think its the least we should expect after forking out 10 or 12 quid for the privilege.

Cinemas generally won't eject people for talking, they've already payed, and management really only care about the money. You need to give the cinemas incentive to eject disruptive patrons, by leaving and demanding that they eject them, or give you your money back. It's worked for me before.

    I love this thread!

I thought that I was alone in my hatred for the dreaded popcorn. The noise! The open mouthed chewing! The smell!
Fact is, the profit margins are huge - there is no chance of them banning it from cinemas, more's the pity. How much is a tub now, about a fiver? Costs barely a few cents to produce, it is the "perfect" product.

Also, YES to CliffHuxtabel - good lord, if I wanted to hear a dissection of the genre as an artform, I'd bring Roger Ebert along with me, and chat about it after the show. Those movie buffs remind me of Jack Black's character in "High Fidelity" - remember him? Generally though, I've found that the louder they talk, the more full of **** they are :p

As for mobile phones, apparently cinemas aren't allowed to install mobile phone blocking technology, but as far as I know there is nothing stating that citizens can't........I haven't bought one of these, but I am finding it hard to resist the temptation!
