Building a Medival Folley

I've decided to go a bit OTT by building medival style "ruins" into my garden. Would have a stone base and between 3-6 brick courses "smashed" in various places. The entrance would have two stone columns at either side and possibly I'd like to build the 'shed' into it with a similar entrance and stone, gothic, window reveal. Does anyone have any thoughts on (a) planning regulations & (b) sourcing the columns & reveals?

Interesting idea, are you doing this to take the piss, or have you any sort of interest.

Quick pointers, nobody, even in medievil times built ruins.

And souns like you are mixing alot of styles and periods, stone and brick, medievil and neo-classic (despite what people think these were 100s of years apart)

I guess there is a bit pi** take in it - isn't that really idea of a "Folley"? I accept the mixing of periods - that even goes further when I consider the 'whole' plan, but it's for something a bit different & a bit of fun - not a historical reproduction

As for mixing styles - I say I'm not - it's "my" style....

    Go on ya mad thing

If you have the pockets , why not - provided that - you have a good designer

Very easy for you to build a pile of c**p otherwise

Will try anything once! At least if it does look like a pile of crap, well, it's already just a ruin right?

I'm no really sure what you would describe as the "reasom of a folly",
    not so much piss taking,
but more a building or structure without purpose,
often build to show off wealth, monuments, or the give the locals something to do (building it :D)

    I like the idea of a "building without purpose" {Thanks for the tip}

Getting back to the subject, anyone have any ideas on sourcing or thoughts on planning??

well i suppose it will be a structure, so normal planning rules in the back garden apply.

sounds mad. guy living near me started bout 12 years ago building his front boundary wall in stone. hes not a mason, therfore took longer than normal. 12 years later hes still going. stone walls, features everywhere! gone a bit overboard at this stage!

    maybe its theraputic or something...

i can imagine ur topping out ceremony. 'Let the ruins be open' !

ur opeing urself up to a lot of slagging by mates aswell...!

If its being discussed here as being crap and sounds like crap then it most certainly will end up like a pile of shite

On one of those home/garden makeover programmes they built a "castle ruin" out of blocks and covered it with rough concrete render, then partially hid it with bushes etc.
It was intended as a kids play area!

Try Wilsons Yard (http://www.wilsonsyard.com/) near Newry. They have lots of authentic columns, gargoyles, old bricks, boars' heads - everything for yer modern ruin.
