I am in the process of setting up a media streamer for movies and music. What I would like to know is a gigabit switch overkill to connect the media streaming device to the xbox 360. What speed is the nic in the 360. I have a friend who said that he was having problems with a 100 meg switch and that when he changed to a gigabit switch, things improved enormously..... yo van get a fanless 5 port gigabit switch for approx €55. is it worth it, is it necessary ?

100Mb is more than sufficient, even for 1080P. How many "clients" did your friend have. If he simply had 1 or 2 XB360s then I would suspect the issue was with the switch (assuming it was a swicth and not a hub) rather than the bandwidth it was capeable of.

Thats said, a Gb switch, along with a Gb card in the server/HTPC is a good way to go. That way a single client device is less lilkely to bring your network to a halt.

So get the Gb switch, just be sure to set all client machines to 100MB.

windows home server. It seems that it will not let me download media player 11. I can't see a way of stopping sharing in ver 10.
