Solitaire, without a doubt. Tetris probably a distant second, followed by something like Bejewelled or Pac-man.

Doom or Wolfenstein 3D ... man I know I spent hours playing them... that or Risk online

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,919 ✭✭✭✭Xavi6

I'd say all the contenders have been mentioned already but I'd say the Championship Manager/Football Manager series is in the top 10 anyway.

I was going to say either pong or pacman since they were kind of around from the start, but, I think you might be onto something with world of warcraft actually.

Yea, champ! I used to play that obsessively but had an epiphany one day where I realised I was criminally wasting my life.

Without a doubt solitaire. Built into Windows + bored office workers = winning combo (and many hours wasted).

    Minesweeper?

A former boss used to player it 7 hours a day. Although he'd mastered the art of Alt-Tab - never once caught him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,738 ✭✭✭mawk

im going to jump on the tetris bandwagon, especially if you include all the clone versions and phone games

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,132 ✭✭✭silvine

Solitare - every PC has it or WOW - people who play its are nuts for it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,823 ✭✭✭✭K.O.Kiki

    Solitaire.

The game is easy to learn, quick to play, and taught every office worker how to use a mouse AND Alt-Tab :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,449 ✭✭✭Call Me Jimmy

I'de rather work than 'play' solitaire. Soul-destroying stuff.

EDIT: I'de rather tug potatoes from the ground under a hot sun than play solitaire actually.

Yep definitely solitaire. Even though the game fills me with hatred to my core I've even found myself dabbling in it out of boredom when I'm in college waiting on long experiments.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,411 ✭✭✭jonski

I am inclined to think it is one of the above but for the sake of a new suggestion , online poker .

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,653 ✭✭✭steviec

    It's obviously Solitaire.

But I'll mention Snake since it hasn't been named yet, certainly a few years ago there was nobody who didn't play it.

Could one of the most played game ever be Super Mario Bros on the Nes, given virtually every home that owned a NES had a copy?
Also, given the ubiquitous nature of the Atari 2600 at one stage, perhaps Combat?

Also, the PSone was immensely popular, could a game on it have been owned by many many people? Maybe Tomb Raider or Crash?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,676 ✭✭✭genericgoon

    The Sims?

Criminal is the word. Its an awful game. When I think back to the hours I wasted on that game... Its horrible.

Every now and again I still consider installing it again (cause I have to delete it every time. Its the only way).

I think the biggest selling PSOne game is Who Wants To Be A Millionaire... it spent literally years in the top ten.

just to say football manager would be nowhere near the top 10.

only in the uk and ireland or maybe 5 people in the US.

age old question and the answer is solitaire (just double checked the gamers record book.) Though i also hoped it was Daikatana. So does John Romero :D

I call bull**** on that record. How would they get that information?

Solitaire of course. Never learnt how to play it :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,823 ✭✭✭✭K.O.Kiki

I call bull**** on that record. How would they get that information?
Assuming 25% of office workers & 10% of home users play Solitaire, and that the home-to-office ratio of Windows licenses is 50/50, that would make 17.5% of all Windows licenses.

How many millions has Microsoft sold again? :pac:

    Also THIS.

    World of warcraft math

Using xfire stats as a ref
6,787,636 minutes played in the last 7 days; take into account that wow is a bit of a down atm (less people playing due to no recently released content)
so lets round that off to 7,000,000 minutes average
    7M mintues / 60 = 11,117 hours
Now assume 5% of people playing wow use xfire (its more likely less % than that). 11,117 @ 5% = 222,340 hours
    That is 1 week, 1 year = 11,561,680
Multiply that by 3 (because wow only really gained its huge momentum after year 1)

    34,685,040 hours +

pfff, **** that, Im sure its more. Ignore my crappy guess-timate-ory math

Anyways its a LOT and I personally believe it out weighs windows solitaire

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,141 ✭✭✭eoin5

I'd go with solitare too, but if you combined all the pokemon releases (I'd say about 95% of them are the same game really anyway) itd b a contender. Theyve sold the best part of 100 million copies!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,283 ✭✭✭Ross_Mahon

Defo World Of Warcraft, I've lost many men to it, some call it the black plague. :(

Off the top of my head calculation-
100,000,000 PCs all with Solitare installed.
Say each solitare is played for just for 5 minutes in the lifetime of each PC.

    100,000,000 * 5 minutes=500,000,000 minutes
    In hours 500,000,000 / 60 = 83,333,333 hours.

It wins since due to sheer volume of people it's available to.

It's hard to argue against Homah's calculations. I'd say the original Space Invaders would be up there too, didn't people get seriously addicted to playing it back in the day.

Not too sure about the maths.

The number of WoW subscriptions passed 10 million recently.

    100 million solitaire users * 5 minutes = 10 million WoW players * 50 minutes

But the average WoW subsciption would be played for many many times more than 50 minutes. Probably 100 times more.

That said, I'd guess there's a lot more than 100 million solitaire equipped machines out there, and probably a fair bit more than an average of 5 minutes played per machine, so I do think Solitaire would win.

But shouldn't there be a distinction between a game that happens to be installed on the machine you just bought and a game you made a consious desicion to buy?
I mean, if that was the criteria then MS could've bundled any old crap and it would have made the top of this list.
