BESS or the Economics in TSM option

We all know that BESS is the cream of business degrees. I recently read about doing Economics in the TR001 option. This meand you study Economics and one other subject, but the other subjects don't look very business or accounting orientated.

Can anyone doing the course advise me here. I've got an interest in accounting and finance, and hope for a career in that area, maybe professional accounting. But I really like economics.

BESS gives you the most choice of Business and Economics. Also if (like me) you like economics at school but don't like it at university you can do single or joint political science without having to backtrack. Overall I recommend it.

Economics and Russian is a brilliant combination, apart from that leave TR001 well alone unless there is something you are passionate about

    Hear hear.

Economics and Maths is a very good combination if you're good technically.

BESS for me is about choice. You have the freedom to go whatever path is right for you at the end of a very, very broad year.

You sound like you know what you want to do so you may freak out in such a broad 1st year but there are two things that could happen in that situation.

    a) you'll hate it, hate all the subjects which aren't connected to Business and by March you'll be like why am I here, get me to some cash flows asap.

    b) you'll accept that it is a broad year, you will embrace the wider education you are getting, you will get involved in all aspects of college life (because you'll have the time) and then when it comes to going into SF you'll be happy you can refocus into your particular areas of interest while having enjoyed JF.

There always should be a third option but I can't think of one right now. Seen as I now forget your question I will just click "submit reply" for the craic.:D

    +1
The main reason I choose BESS was because I hadn't a clue what I wanted to do and although economics is your main subject you get the chance to experience the others before you commit to econ. Another big plus for you would be the amount of overlap between the BESS subjects - Maths and Stats meet Economics in a good few topics and I hear this is the same with maths and stats, economics and business in SF. It sounds like BESS would suit you better

Sounds like BESS is more your kinda thing. If you want to do finance, accounting and economics, do BESS then do joint honours Business and Economics in 2nd year. Or you could Economics by itself.

Business and Economics really complement each other well, especially the finance side of Business (rather than the management and marketing sides.)

Through TSM the best to do would probably be Economics and Maths, but then Maths is a love or hate thing :) The Maths would really up your employablitly (what a word!) in any Economics type jobs.

Or you could do Economics and a language, but only German, Spannish and Russian are offered with Economics as far as I know.

Or I suppose if you have an interest in Psychology, Geography, Philosophy History or Sociology, you could do TSM with one of those, but they would really add to the Economics degree if you know what I mean.

Pretty much what everyone else said. Best bet for corporate-y stuff with bits of accounting and economics is to go in through BESS and go down the Business/Economics route. Plus, as others have said, you may find new stuff you really like when you get to college - I started into BESS relatively sure I'd end up doing Business/Sociology, and now I do Economics. College can surprise you, and having a broad first year isn't a bad idea.

I have to admit, wasn't overly enthusiastic about BESS back in 1st year, but over the past 3 years its turned into quite a challenging and rewarding degree... rewarding meaning I'm actually going to get a very good job out of it. Don't listen to any of these engineering monkeys or english students going on about how they are doing a better degree because they have more hours, remember, you'll be their boss in a few years time and earning alot more than them... FACT.

1st year BESS is like eating at the buffet at a wedding, you can have a sample of everything, for example, a bit of salmon, some beef and that odd looking cheese over there. If after a while you dont like the cheese, but quite enjoy the salmon and beef, then pull up a chair and get to work wolfing it down! AWESOME! :D
