Rough work in exams- no hard and fast rules?

Bit of a stupid question I know but I haven't concentrated on an exam in years.

Can I just write notes to myself in the margins and on pages marked 'rough work' no problem?

Also, should I bother sealing the corner that hides my personal details or does that matter?

What do you mean write notes to yourself? Anyway you can write what you want as long as your actual answer is clear and easily followed. Rough work can get marks as well if its along the right tracks so no need to completely hide it.

Half the sealed things come unstuck. I rarely bother myself unless I have loads of time at the end.

Citations that I don't want to forget in a few sentences time and other memory prompts

I'll use a different ink colour in the margins and that should be fine

    Thanks

I forgot to fill in the personal details part on the front of the cover for the first two exams. Is it ok if I just had my exam number for them.

    I think that is fine

Gallardo: yes, they're only really used if there's a mix up as to exam numbers etc. WesClark, yes you can write stuff, I would just advise 1) to not put stuff in the margins, they're used for correcting and 2) to clearly mark it as rough work

What did you think, that they would automatically fail you for putting down rough work on the paper?

    Zwei, please refrain from acrimony.

Just did my exam today and for convenience I put each question in a separate answer book.

Is this an okay thing to do??

Its fine, as long as you filled out the front of each one.

You have to do it in some exams (including ones where you use up to 12 answer books....stupid physics dept)

It's kind of funny though. "Each question in a separate answer book". But wait? There's 20 questions and we're marked on our best 10, we have to fill out all of the covers? Surely we can have some time to answer the questions too?

At least you get tea, coffee and biscuits during your final exams though...

Well now I cant wait for exams next year!! ;)

I'd say best thing to do for rough work is to use a separate answer book and dont hand it up...

you have to hand up all answer books. There have been cases where people have tried to sneak out answer books, fill them with answers and sneak them back into the next exam.

I've left answer books on my desk many a time (sometimes with crap in them which I deemed too awful to hand up).

I especially liked how they only gave you four books to begin with so you can't possibly fill them all out ahead of time. I ended up spending the last ten minutes just filling out the front of answer books rather then starting another question (admittedly I had done all the questions that I had the faintest idea how to do but still...)

That was awesome. Got me through one or two exams when I hadn't had much sleep.

These would then be collected by invigilators after the exam and sealed with the other exam rubbish. This is kept in the exams office until after the results have been published in case there are queries about any exam script. I remember being the chief invigilator in the RDS several years ago and spending half the night going through the bins looking for a missing scrap of paper:mad:

During schols last year the exam books were just left in the arts block, quite accessible to anyone who was passing by. Thought it was bit ridiculous my self.
