Hi all, recently bought a brand new Ford Focus Zetec. Having owned the car for about a month I thought I'd better check the spare wheel; to my disgust I found that I don't have a spare wheel but a contimobility kit. I called the sales guy who told me this is the norm these days, now I know 2 guys with new Mondeo's who both have spare wheels. Is this the norm or have I been done?

never head of this kit, usually its a space saver you get with a no cost option for full size spare wheel

A full size spare wheel is a zero cost option afaik. The kit you have increases boot space.

Heard about these alright...I understand its some kind of aerosol can full of air & some magic goo that inflats a tyre & fills the puncture (if there is one)...

I know that for the new Mondeo you have to specify when you order the car that you want the space saver instead of this aerosol can. A full size wheel is €150 option.... I think this is the same on the new Mazda 6 also.

Would a full size wheel even fit in the Focus ?

It does in mine and saves buying a tyre when the first set get run down!!!

My grandparents have a full size spare in their 06 Focus. Had a call out to put the f*ing thing on in the pissing rain in a puddle that was expanding at 3pm outside a school:rolleyes:

A full-sized tyre as fitted as standard to my Focus C-Max (205/55 16) won't fit into the spare tyre well ... it's big enough diameter wise (obviously!), but the standard tyre is too wide and would cause the boot lining to bulge. I've got a space saver in mine.

they put different styrofoam in mine to accomodate the bigger tyre and a different size floor mat

So it's just a can of tyre weld:eek:

Do you get a jack with the kit?

Just bought one myself and you are right they don't come with spare wheels - luckily I knew the parts manager and got one but they don't come as standard which is bizarre...Ps Love the car !

I haven't got any styrofoam in mine at all ... the spare wheel just sits against the metal of the well.

The Ford S-Max doesn't come with a spare, and there's nowhere to put one. The sealant kit sits in a little cubbyhole under the rear passengers feet.

BMWs and Minis all come with runflats and no spare, right?

I have a space saver in my 05 new shape Focus but I know someone who bought the new shape 08 Focus and only got the tyre weld kit. He was a bit pissed off too as he was not told about it at the time of ordering the car. He's on the look out now for a second hand space saver from a Focus in a scrap yard.

Correct & IIRC there is therefore no need for a toolkit.

Alot of brands have gone that way now. Autoexpress did an article on this in issue 1009 23 - 29th April this year.

My brother in law got a new 3 series BMW a few months ago and there is no key / tool for removing the locking wheel nuts. Looked all over the car and couldn't find one anywhere. I would assume it should have been supplied with one.

Run flats will do 150 miles at up to 80 km/h when a puncture is detected.

A full size spare wheel is a nil cost option. Just checked.

I have the same '08 Focus with the ContiMobility Kit my '05 had a spare. And got stranded over Christmas.

Firstly I got a puncture outside the house, so I thought I'd just take off the wheel bring it around and get it fixed, but I didn't have a jack or a wheel wrench, the wrench from my wifes car wouldn't fit the bolts so I had to borrow one from a neighbour.

Then the following week I hit a pothole and damaged the rim of the wheel, so the ContiMobility Kit was no use. So I had to wait an hour for the AA to arrive and hammer the rim back into place.

So I was going to buy a spare wheel for it seeing that it has the space for it. So I went back to the Ford Garage and into the Salesman and started giving out about what happened and how he never told me that it didn't have a spare wheel when I bought the car. He then said that he'd get me a spare from Ford, but I'd have to pay a portion of the price. So for €30, I got the spare wheel, jack and wrench and the bits to hold it in place. I think a few people must have done the same, so it's worth getting back onto the garage.

just got an 08 C-Max, same story, would prefer a spare, phoned around a few scrap places and none to be found, 205/55/R16
anyone picked one up recently at a good price?

just measured the "bay" in the boot and a full wheel does not fit.
Not car minded, is there a space saver slimmer wheel that I can get that will fit the bay?
    thanks in advance
