Im going on holidays with some of my mates after the leaving and one of them booked it all. Were going to Gran Canaria. I go on sun holidays every year but always to europe e.g spain portugal. Anyway i know Gran Canaria is off Africa and i have this phobia of spiders that i keep kinda quiet so i was wondering what kind of spiders have they there. Im okay with the little irish spiders but im gettin worried il hop off the plane see a tarantula and hop right back on.

    Thanks in advance

Spiders are everywhere - you can't escape. I suffer from serious Arachniphobia but that would'nt stop me from going on hols (except maybe Australia or the Amazon - spider hell those places). I don't think the canaries are any worse then anywhere else despite their closeness to Africa.

I've got pretty bad arachnaphobia too. Having been to the Canary Islands more times than I care to remember, and with the exception of one nasty experience with a cockroach (not a spider, before the pedants arrive) I can say I've not had any bother on any of the islands.

If you want to know what the expeirence was, you can ask and I'll tell ye!

I'm way more worried about the cockroaches tbh. I cannot deal with them that all, hate the things. It doesn't help that they're seemingly impervious to the force of my shoe as well!

Yeah , those big bastard cockroaches are the ones to watch out for and you tend to bump into them when least expecting it .

Now the little lizards that were everywere in ibiza .They were cute , i liked them :)

I haven't been to Gran Canaria but have been to Lanzerote and Tenerife and tbh can't even remember seeing a spider! I have a terrible fear of all things creepy crawly and I honestly had no probs with the spiders out there... just don't go looking for them I suppose!

The cockroaches are another thing, those things freak me out and they are pretty common over there. Day 1, buy a spray that kills them and store in your apt. I don't know if this is an urban myth, but I heard that if you smash one, then the scent attracts loads more (maybe they all come to the funeral!) That's prob BS, but I always get the spray to be sure, to be sure.

Or if you are really worried, you could get one of those plug in things that keeps away spiders and plug it in your bedroom, at least you would have one refuge! Not sure if those things work though.

I actually have a creepy feeling even writing this!:(

My g/f is scared stiff of spiders, even the little Irish ones, but she loves goign to the canarie islands. Trust me if she's willing to go, there can't be that many spiders running around.

I was there about 10 years ago and there were no Spiders there. I hate them too actually.

It was more a problem with the cockraches. They were everywhere. It's even worse if you get a ground floor apartment because at night, they just stroll along and make themselves comfy in the apartment helping themselves to your beer and food while your out having a good time.

Now the entertaining thing is, before you go out and see some of them around your apartment or balcony, flip it on it's back. When you come back from your night out, you should find 2 lines of ants coming to and fro from the cockroach. Each little soldier taking a piece of the beast with it. Nature at it's best really.

I was told by locals, not to just crush them into the ground because their eggs fly out everywhere and nature can still run it's course.

Useless info but there ya have it!

"then the scent attracts loads more (maybe they all come to the funeral!) "

thats hillarious..when you kill them by dancing on them what happens is there eggs will be released and hatch later.

When we last were over in Grand canaria,on arrival we discoverd we had a small ant infestation in one corner of the room so the chambermaid lady gave us a spray can of this really strong stuff ( with image of cockroache on can ) and told us it would kill most insects and bugs including cockroaches .We tried it out on the ants and sure enough they disapeared ( although they left there dead behind ) We decided to take the spray home with us to use on any british ants who dare cross our paths :D
