HDMI and Optical issue

Looking for help from people using a surround sound setup with their PS3 (only way to play tbh)

I've switched my PS3 from outputting sound via the HDMI connection to the optical connection but i've found sound is now coming out from both the optical and HDMI connection? Is there any way to stop this altogether?

Also when i'm selecting optical and the output formats there are 2 PCM options greyed out that I can't unselect. Is there anyway of disabling these output formats?

Any help or ideas appreciated. I'll rep+ accordingly ;)

I got a feeling you can't turn off the audio on the hdmi output. The ps3 seems to have audio issues anyway if you google it.

My brother got a slightly different problem. After a ps3 update, he got no sound from hdmi and couldn't find a solution for it. So he just got himself some much needed surround sound speakers so now sound comes out of the optical.

You'll just gonna have to turn down the volume on the tv.

Thats not true. I have HDMI enabled for video only and optical out for sound. So do lots off other people.
I would recommend to reset all display and audio settings.

I think I accidentally stumbled into this supposed trick with the PS3 to get audio out of the HDMI and Optical connection. When I do the exact opposite to this video I get audio out only over the optical connection
