Blackberry & wireless

    Hi,

As you can see from this post I am a complete beginner.:)

I want to be able to receive my email on the go so a blackberry was recommended to me.

I thought that if i got one with wireless capability they it would cut down on roaming charges for receiving emails when I go to the UK.

The guy in carphone warehouse recommended the blackberry curve 8310 but when I checked online I saw that the blackberry 3200 was the only one offering wifi. As far as I can see neither 02 or Vodafone are offering the 320.

Has anybody here had experience of using the 3200 in Ireland and if so is the wifi satisfactory?

O2 are offering the Palm Treo 500v, is this a reasonable alternative to the blackberry? Does it handle file attachments?

    Thanks

    Al

As far as I know you can only use Blackberry through your network. So if abroad roaming having wifi access will only let you check emails using your web browser or a third party application and not through the Blackberry functions of your handset.

Personally I'd go for something like the Nokia e51. It supports Blackberry if that's what you want but it also has it's own email. It has wifi and also HSDPA.

It also has the added benefit of beign very slimline and it's actually a sweet phone for texting on too!

The only Blackberry phones that support WiFi are the 8120, 8320 & 8820. None of those are on release here yet, so thats the Blackberry ruled out if it "must" have wireless

How often do you roam in the UK? Is it going to be frequent enough to have amajor effect on your bill?

Also, the Treo 500 does not have wireless so I dont see the benefit of going for that?

One other option if you really "must" have WiFi, is to go for a Nokia E51 or E61i etc and use Blackberry Connect software on it. This effectively turns your phone into a Blackberry. Then you also have WiFi on the phone if you need it. It can get complex then depending on how many email accounts, how often you visit the UK and other factors.

Let us know how important this is and a few other details and we can try point you in the right direction

As random says, the Wifi cannot be used for the Blackberry email account, so it would mean setting up the account in duplicate on the phone and using the built in email client and disabling Blackberry. Could all get very messy and complicated

There is a service out there called emoze.com that is supposed to provide push email to any phone for free. I presume you pay data charges for the service. might be worth checking out and it might open out your choice of phones
