"3" Handset, No 3g signal and opera mini...

    Hi,
    A 3-newbie question:
my missus got a "3" handset. Now, we live outside 3's "video coverage" zone or whatever they call it - so via the phone's native browser we only get the basic 3-info page (balance check and games shop), but no web browsing...
However, earlier today, by accident, I tried opera mini at home, and that works without a hitch, at normal speed.
What's the deal re. charges? Is the web usage via opera mini taken of the data add-on (1gb), or is it charged differently cause web, well..shouldn't work where we live? Oh, it's a 3-pay phone/prepay! So far they haven't charged anything, it seems, but I remember a glitch with vodafone a couple of years ago when they let me continue to browse, though I had run out of credit, and lol I got a bill a couple of days later... Don't wanna use opera mini, and get a nasty surprise!?

    thanks

    Hi Strecker,

I've got the same question - here's how I think it works.

If you're getting 3G coverage => you're on 3's network => any data usage comes off your add on.

If you're not getting 3G then you're roaming on Vodafone - for this I think they charge if you're using data.

I've been using a 3 UK SIM for browsing only on the train - I've noticed that even though I have a data add on my balance is going down by small amounts - a few pence here and there. I'm taking that to be charges for using data as I'm roaming on Vodafone.

    Could be wrong though :)

that's what I thought... So how long until they deduct credit? It's been nearly 10 hrs - and no change to our credit?

I've not been charged for using data on Vodafone when out of the Three 3G coverage. I am on the "unlimited" xseries bundle though so that might be why, but have certainly made use of data when miles outside of any genuine Three signal.

Edit: @long_b - Just noticed you said you were on a Three UK sim. I would expect you to get charged if using data whilst roaming on Three IE and outside of their own signal. I was in the UK the last weekend though and was able to freely roam with data on the Three UK signal, but whenever the provider changed I just could not use any data until the Three signal came back.

    Thanks, robinph...

just checked - nothing's been charged.
Good so far... Damn, why didn't I try om sooner where I live hehehe Always used it on my vodafone handset at a higher cost, because that 3-phone's native browser wouldn't let us browse....
    Ah, well....
    New beginnings..
    Thanks again!
