    Hi ,

Just wondering if any one could tell me how exactly i start a career with the Civil Service. I just want to start off as a cleric and hopefully progress from there.

I have been told by a number of people to register with publicjobs.ie but i have also heard that there are exams you have to do and that it can take several months to get in.

So do i just apply for any job on public jobs to get in to their recruitment process or is their something else i have to do.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

You need to keep an eye out on www.publicjobs.ie for a competition that you want to enter and then apply for it.

It is normal for it to take several months to get in- after you pass the examination and the competitive interview- sometimes it can take in excess of 2 years. After 2 years the old panels that were constituted are dissolved and new panels made from a fresh competition.

You need to register with publicjobs.ie and keep an eye on it- check once a forthnight at very least to make sure you don't miss anything that you're interested in.

But seriously, what smccarrick said. You can be waiting a long time after the exam for an interview, depending on how well you do. After the interview, you will be informed if you passed, and then have to wait for a vacancy to arise for an offer to be made to you. Good luck.

In Cavan there was a great fire / Judge McCarthy was sent to inquire / It would be a shame / If the nuns were to blame / So it had to be caused by a wire.
