Souljazz Records do alot of Compilations of various types of music including rock from around the world, check out the Tropicalia or Brazil 70 ones for example.
Also, German stuff from the 70's, Can, Neu!, Faust, Amon Dull II.
Some Japanese stuff too like Boredoms.
Loads of stuff out there too hear, don't limit yourself to the closed minds of the UK and US music scenes.
    Enjoy :D

Tinariwen - desert rock from Mali. Sang in the language of the Tuareg people of the Sahara desert. Very unique sound with some excellent guitar playing!
The first song I heard by them which aroused my interest was a song called "Assouf".

Buena Vista Social Club (self-titled album is gold, if you're looking for individual songs, start with "Chan Chan")

    Joe Dassin "Les Champs-Élysées"

Not alt rock if that's what you're looking for, but worth a listen anyway

Seu Jorge is the bloke who does the Bowie songs in portugeese.
Other than that, I'd go for Sigur Ros' stuff.
Think Travis did a song in French too.

And sure what about the Irish language?
Cailin na nGaillimhe by Mundy, eh?

here here about Sigur Ros, if your into hypnotic chill-out music from Iceland, they even made up their own language for one of their albums, i think it was a mixture of Icelandic and gibberish!

+1 for both Sigur Ros and Amadou & Mariam
    +1million for Can :D

Gotta add Kraftwerk, start with Radioactivitat or Autobahn

Also Dead Can Dance, they're an Australian duo but most of their songs are not in any known language. Listen to something like Yulunga, absolutely incredible.
