Do Civil Service Summer contracts get extended often?

Hi, I had my interview last week for the summer temp position as a CO in the civil service. I'm optimistic about getting it but I'm in a job now, good pay, but I don't like it. Is it worth taking the risk of taking the temp civil service job in the hope that they'll keep me on? Just wondering if they keep on alot of people after the summer?
    Thanks

There were about 20 of us in last year and they kept 3 on, it really depends on the department I think.

Yeah, when I was working in a County Council one guy was offered a fulltime job from the summer job.

Sometimes, on rare occasions, you might get some extra time but don't expect to get a permanent job out of it.

Its highly unlikely that it would result in a fulltime job. The contract may be extended- but only for a limited duration. Personnel Departments have had the terms of the Fixed Term Working Act drummed into them by the Department of Finance over the last few months, big time.

I joined the service as a t.c.o 3 years ago. what my department done was to offer me a year long contract and during that time i applied trough publicjobs and joined the civil service as a permanent c.o.

I did join a section to fill the space of someone who was not coming back after term time so i would advise you to check the status of the position you filled ( has the person eft the service or are they on a long carear break etc) you may find that they will be back after the 13 weeks and you will be out of a job

i doubt that they will offer you a permanent position without you haveing to apply trough public jobs for the position of a c.o. All departments have to hire their co's off the PAS panel if they just offered you the job they could get into a lot of trouble with unions etc

It is a long shot but could work out for you if your willing to take the gamble

Hi, Does anyone know if they keep people on after a temporary summer contract in the Revenue?

Very rarely- the summer contracts are to provide cover while staff are on "term-time". In addition Social Welfare and Agriculture have both been canvassed recently concerning excess Dublin staff for release, primarily to Revenue. With the Fixed Term Work Act- Departments are loathe to extend employment contracts or make any agreements which may result in staff accruing additional employment rights. Its not impossible that it may be extended, just improbable.
