    Hi,
I am a student from India. I have planned to go for post graduate study in business
informatics from DCU in dublin. From what I have been able to gather
is that education standard is very good, DCU is also good. And the
cost comes to around same as that of US
as here the course is of 1 year duration.
But I don't know anyone first hand in Ireland. So am lacking in many
details. It would be great if you can help me.

I am putting down my queries below in as concise manner as possible
for me. Please answer the ones you know of.

    1) DCU - How is it? It's standards, recognition etc.
    2) Indian students face any difficulty or discrimination/ standard
of study compared to India/ how do guys from here fare?
    3) Availability of part time jobs/ are they sufficient to sustain one self.
    4) Staying options?? Need to do part times so shud try for acco in
    city or college hostel??
    5) Getting a job after passing?? No need to stay back, but need to
work there for sometime to recover the study loan amount. icon_smile.gif
and gather some experience. Here I would like to mention my
current profile. B.E in comp Sc with abt
3 yrs of ex in software industry in Java/J2EE in companies like
    Infosys, IBM, and Amdocs.
So with this kind of profile+the course, what shud I expect with
a moderate luck in my favour. icon_smile.gif

    Thanks a lot in Advance,

I’ll give you my opinion and I am sure others will do…

I would be surprised if Ireland is the same as the US. I expect Ireland is much cheaper from the tuition perspective. But cost of living is higher in Ireland than US.

Good, but Nationally all the main Universities are. Internationally on average its well perceived, but of course it varies by discipline. I presume you mean the European M.Sc. in Business Informatics – this is new, so difficult if not impossible to judge standard. But I would have no worries about it.

Discrimination – I’d be shocked if this happened in DCU. There are strong rules, so you should not worry.

I don’t know about visa and working, but I am told its easy to get a part-time job.

Talk to the International office, they may be able to help. The publish info on there website http://www.dcu.ie/international/living.shtml

My feeling is that for a good student, there should be no problem. This course will be small and the ability to interact with industry should be high.

Can't tell you, as the above posted.
    2) Indian students face any difficulty or discrimination/ standard
of study compared to India/ how do guys from here fare?

    I've never seen it.
    3) Availability of part time jobs/ are they sufficient to sustain one self.

With the current state of our country, there are plenty of part-time jobs available in shops like Tesco, and small independant shops. That might change soon, as the construction sector is slowing down. There might be a lot of unemployed young guys around who you may be competing against for jobs. But you should be ok to be honest.
    4) Staying options?? Need to do part times so shud try for acco in
    city or college hostel??

There's a few places to stay very close to DCU, but if you pick somewhere thats about a 30 minute walk from DCU, it will be less expensive I think. There are a few places to avoid, you should come back to this forum closer to the time to check. Right now, you should avoid the Gateway Building!!

    5) Getting a job after passing?? No need to stay back, but need to
work there for sometime to recover the study loan amount.

To be honest, computer graduates from India seem to be doing very well!! IBM seem to take on loads of people of Indian descent! Each time that I've been in their recruiting offices, all the guys and girls I've been talking to have been indian. So it looks good. :)

I don't know about DCU but I have met a lot of Indian people in Ireland who seem to like it. And DCU has a good reputation in Ireland, why a lot of people suggested to em to study there. And it's near the city so lots of jobs.
What part of India are you from?

I am from Bengal, in India.. It's eastern India. You know abt India????.. I am actually quite confused wether to jump in or not. Everything seems for the better, but still before spending 20K euros you do think... :(
Also with the IT market going down no one knows.... But again in the next 1.5yrs most probably it'll be flying again... So many things to consider.. :)

Myth. There was an event on in DCU yesterday where nearly 150 companies came in, and every single one was recruiting. Small indication but there is absolutely no shortage. If you have that type of background you could get a job over here no bother at all

However i'd agree with the rest, you most definitely wont find discrimination and part time jobs can be found with minimal of effort, again especially with the IT qualifications.

I do indeed! Ive been trying to get into the University of Calcutta for a while now. But Im starting in DCU instead. Ive no idea about the course you want to do but I think you should go. Ireland is great fun, but it is a lot of money.
Can you answer me one thing- is your labguage called Bengali or Bangla_
People keep telling me different names.

It's Great to know u wanted to go for Calcutta (It's now called Kolkata for the last few years.). I am from Kolkata itself. Actually in english our language is called Bengali (from the name of state West Bengal), but in bengali it is called Bangla :D (West in bengali is Pashchim and Bengal is Bongo.) So from Bongo comes Bangla...... I guess it's a bit tough to explain.. Bengali people are sometimes referred as Bongs in short... U must have heard of Tagore, his place is here only.. U shud sometime come and visit..

To be honest, IT is one sector that will always need people, its not as if we are going to start using less computers!!

:) ... That's true... But with the initial hype dying off, it's no more that white collared any more.... :(

It was about 150 people Mad Max but not 150 companies - there was about 95 organisations that showed up though, not to mention the many more that are in touch with me on a regular basis about wanting to get their hands on DCU Computing graduates! 95 companies recruiting and about 68 graduates - quite a short fall there...

Details of the event can be seen here: www.computing.dcu.ie/fyp
