Do you want to keep what's on your hard drive?

The best approach would be to wipe the disk, so back anything up that you need beforehand. As part of the XP installation, it will give you the option to format the drive you're installing it on. It's very straightforward.

Easiest way would be to boot your Laptop from your XP disc and when you are presented with the screen which allows you to choose where you want to install XP select the drive you have Vista on and select the quick format option. Bear in mind this will erase all data on that drive so backup anything important.

Don't forget that VISTA home doesn't have downgrade rights to XP, and so you would need to have a separate XP license, and you can't move an OEM XP license to another machine.

If you have Vista business then you are allowed to downgrade to XP.

First, especially if you have a SONY check the web site for XP drivers, if they aren't any then you are off to a flying stop.

Next make sure you have a Vista CD or restore image or find out from the web site how to make one , so you can install Vista if need be later on.

Vista will recognise XP but as a rough rule XP wont recognise Vista so you will loose everything on the PC as it's a clean install. Also if you don't have XP SP2 CD you will probably need to get SATA drivers and press F6 during setup , or if a laptop change the HDD mode in the BIOS too. Booting from the XP CD , (with the correct settings/Drivers) should allow you to delete the existing partition and then the long haul of installing begins.

Is there a particular reason why you need XP ?
In a lot of cases Vista can be tweaked to be a bit faster / allow old apps to run, and it saves a lot of hassle. Options that don't affect Vista much range from Virtual Machines to Ubuntu / wine
