Just a quickie, because I have a commercial vehicle and commercial insurance, I'm not insured to drive other cars (non commercial) under my policy, but if my friend has a private policy which allows anyone to drive their car who has a full license, can I drive it and be covered under their policy?

Yes... Your policy doesn't come into it..
If its detailed in their policy and you have the lisence you're covered, most have an age requirment as well..
Check it for yourself and dont get caught out !!;)

do you not mean are you covered to drive other cars third party even if their policy isn't open driving? this is usually the case if you have a private policy.

see when I had my micra and fiesta, I was able to just jump into any of my friends cars and drive us wherever, but I forget what the rules were with other people driving MY car, so what are most private policies like because I forget :o I seem to remember it being something about any fully licensed driver over 25, that is of course if they have open drive, or do they need open drive?

Cormie, you're takling about 2 different things.

    1. Most private policies allow the driver (policyholder) to drive any other private car as long as they don't own it.
(I asked a while back it mine covered me to drive a mates van and they said no.)
If you drive someone elses car like this, then you're covered under YOUR policy.

    2. If your mates car has an open drive policy then *anyone* can drive it. They usually specify "anyone" as "anyone over 25 with a full license" but it depends on the policy.
If you were to drive his car in this case then you'd be covered under HIS policy.

To drive the posters car they need the option to "drive other cars" not "Open Drive"

"Open drive" allows others to drive the vehicle the policy is taken out on...

The option to "drive other cars" allows the policy holder to drive another vehicle.

Both will have differing conditions depending who the policy is taken out with..
It is important to know the difference and to know that you cannot cross to commercial vehicles using these policies, not sure if this applies to all companies.
