I appled for a job in Tesco for the Summer until I go back to college in September.Anyone know the rate of pay per hour, the rate of pay for working nights, for working weekends, bank holidays etc.I've heard of people coming out with well over 500 euro a week stacking shelves and working as cashiers.I wouldn't mind that kind of money in my hand each week considering how expensive college life is when your trying to run a car etc.

I used to work there so I can be of some help. I think it's around €9 an hour now. Sundays is time and a half, bank holidays are usually time and a half as well (some are double time I think can't remember which though). Nights is time and a third. Monday to Saturday (outside of bank holidays) is normal time.

I'd doubt you'd be able to make €500 a week out of the place especially during the summer. They generally have a lot of college students working there who would be looking for extra hours during the summer so you would probably only get around 20-25 hours a week (that is what you'll likely be contracted for).

    Moved from After Hours.

I never told them I was a student.I just said I was looking for a full-time job I'd definitely want more than 25 hours a week.I'd be looking for 40 hours anyway and all the over time I can get.

Thanks for the information all the same.

I think you misunderstood me. They have students who work there during college terms doing feck all hours. When summer comes the students will be looking at getting more hours. This limits the amount of hours that will be available to new people starting. Tescos contract for new people starting off is 20 or 25 hours (or at least it was last time I was there, it could be even lower now). The existing staff will get preference over extra hours instead of the new guys so you'll be way down the list when they are handing out full time hours.

When I started there it was the summer before I started college. I was mostly on around 20 - 30 hours a week. Some weeks I got a lot more but that was generally to cover other staff on holidays.

Make sure to tell them that you are looking for all the hours you can get though as there will be some days they'll screw up the roster and be left short staffed. If they know you're looking for extra hours then you'll probably be first on the list of people they'll call.
