    hey guys,

    wondering if anyone can help...?

today i was told in work i am doing complusory overtime next weekend
i usually work 9-5, but is in my contract that i can be scheduled to work weekends. but my questions are:

Q1. is it legal to give an employee complusory overtime?
Q2. and to only give one weeks notice?? (this is what is really bothering me)

I've booked an holiday next weekend you see

    thanks in advance

I have the same conditions written into my contract.
And i have been in almost the same position as you, i ended up saying i cant make it as i already have plans made.
There was some fuss about it but eventually i won the fight and continued with my plans.
As fas as im aware the overtime at weekends has to suit both the employer and the employee. And as i already had plans the overtime didnt suit me and i could not be forced to work it.

Yeah I think Ot has to suit both parties, so if you need extra cash you cant just say "boss i'm working the next 5 weekends" Like wise if they ask you then you can refuse.

Sadly I never refuse as i'm a money grabbing w*ore!

A weeks notice is reasonable, and your contract states you might be required to work some weekends.

Telling your boss something like "what you're doing is illegal" could come across as difficult, and could damage you in his/her eyes.

Saying all that, your boss would want to be a massive prick to force you to come into the office when you had already planned a holiday.

Your post doesn't mention whether or not you've spoken to your boss about this.

    Have you?
    What did he/she say?

A week is hardly reasonable??? Especially considering the weather... (that is it wouldn't be unexpected for people to be trying to get weekends away around now)

If you've already made plans then you're not available for work that weekend.

They might be able to make you do compulsory overtime, but you also have to agree when you are able to do it.

I dont think your boss has a leg to stan on.
