Looks like my brother's type 2 that went up in smoke on the N7 last year after an engine fire. :(

They were notorious for this; I would always recommend carrying a large fire extinguisher with in one of these.

His new one will be getting some special wraparound extinguisher fitted in the engine bay.
    Once bitten, eh? :)

I presume the old splitscreen wouldn't be regarded as as much as a classic in Brazil as they would be here. Sure weren't they still building them there up until the late 90's or was that just the type 2?

That photo was captured by a professional photographer who knew what he was at.

No, splitties are becoming quite rare in Brazil now with clean models being snapped up and exported world wide. I have come across several on Ebay being sold in the UK. They finished the type 2a after 1971. After that VW went down the toilet in Brazil like the rest of the world when they produced the "bay window" type 2b model.

Brazil also produced a unique bastardized minibus that had a bay window front and a pre 62 wrap around windowed rear end. They spoiled it with ugly looking post 76 rear lamps.

im sure its not the only part of the world where classics as we call them are regarded as barricades by rioters. I was watching the news last week and it showed beirut and part of the clip featured a renault 16 and an older mercedes up in smoke hit by a missile.....

Classic cars should be given protection during a war, apparently thousands of Citroen Traction Avants were massacred in the Vietnam war.

New fuel lines would be cheaper....prevention rather than cure?

There should be an enquiry about this especially the splitty. It was only last year , , the Beetle is the later 12 volt model with European fenders, and upright headlamps and would still be a dime a dozen out there.

when the balkan war was on, over a decade ago, thousands of fiat 600's and 1300/1500 were destroyed. there was one clip on the news where a tank drove right through a 600 and flattened it.

Can't imagine there's much left of the old fuel lines after an engine bay fire....so I'd be guessing it'll have new fuel lines any way :p

Different van - the other was a write off!
The last one had been just been reconditioned by a third party - with new fuel lines.
Words were had after the fire, as you can imagine.
