    Tourist strips in whistle protest

Road workers in a small New Zealand town got their wish granted when a woman stripped saying she was fed up with their wolf-whistles.

The Israeli tourist was about to use an ATM in the main street of Kerikeri, in the far north of the country, when the men whistled, the New Zealand Press Association reported.

She calmly stripped off, used the cash machine, before getting dressed and walking away.

The woman told police she didn't take too kindly to the whistling from the men repairing the road.

"She said she had thought 'bugger them, I'll show them what I've got'," Police Sergeant Peter Masters told NZPA.

"She gave the explanation that she had been ... pestered by New Zealand men. She's not an unattractive looking lady," Masters said.

"She was taken back to the police station and spoken to and told that was inappropriate in New Zealand."

Not much of a protest really if you ask me.

Anyway, do any of the brothers partake in the odd bit of wolf whistling as a hottie walks by? Can't say I ever have myself, though it wouldn't really be the done thing around the office!

Also have any of the brotherettes been subjected to it, and if so was it flattering or demeening?

Yes. Depends on the source... He's obviously bold, but is he also a dashing and handsome wolf that whistles?

I can't say I've ever whistled at a lady and I don't see myself doing it anytime soon. I just see it as something 'cheap and nasty' if that makes any sense.

I cannot do those loud whistles so I think it is pointless...

Wolf whistling isn't an attempt to communicate with a woman; it's a pack-bonding thing with men.

I find it tacky , immature and insulting to all genders.

People should be allowed walk around without the added burden of third parties commenting on how they look.

A gentle ass tap is much better. Women can't get enough of that one. Try it

I think that all the brothers being gents that they are do know better then to sexually assault a stranger, such things are kept for where they belong.

I think its sad and reflects more on the bloke then the woman subjected to it.
It's passable if its just wolf whistling, but its never just that it usually involves more
"Phhhwwwwooooaaaarrrr what I'd do to you" while doing pelvic thrusts and generally intimidating the woman walking by.
I just wish the men doing it realised how upsetting it is for some women walking by a group of guys and how scary it can be especially in town at night.

Animals use puffed chests and mating calls to try and attract a mate.

    Discovery channel said so.

In my day, I've gotten a lot of wolf whistles, the latest was around 3 years ago when I was getting my baby out of her car seat and into the buggy bringing her into work to show her off. I was parked near a building site.

I love a good wolf whistle me!!!

I once had a guy stare at me so much he literally walked into a lamppost :D Damn I wish I was still a teenager!

Never saw the point in wolf whistling. Its not gonna make women like you. In fact you'll just look like a complete gobsheen while failing at the mating game.

I can see a point in it now though if it will encourage wimmins to get their kit off in "protest"!

Xavi, the Brotherette options in the poll are too extreme, there needs to be one somewhere in the middle. Getting a whistle is a little confidence boost that can perk up your day but I would not:

    a) wear a shorter skirt the next day (desperado!)

    or

    b) think they guy is a pervert

god loves a trier after all! ;)

Whenever I try to whistle, I sound like I'm having an asthma attack. Chicks don't really tend to dig it, so I don't bother

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,958 ✭✭✭DJ_Spider

I can't do the wolf whistle thing, I canonly do a normal whistle or a reasonably quiet whistle through my teeth! Also I prefer to use my eyes, especially in the summer, while wearing dark glasses of course! In fact I love nothing more than sitting near crowds of people and just watching them. I'm not some kind of pervert, I watch all people. I like imagining what they do, where they are going, what thier name is, how old they are and what sort of relationship they are in! :D

I think its a bit silly to be offended at a wolf-whistle. Sure, its a bravado thing, but I doubt they'd bother if you weren't lookin' a little bit hawt tbh.

Where is the option for "Do you as a brotherette, wolf-whistle?"

I dont exactly make a habit of it, but when I was at the receiving end of a whistle once, I gave him an ear-piercing wolf-whistle back. I proceeded to give him a cheeky smile and told him that mine was better than his.

No harm in it tbh (Imo).

I don't necessarily think it's offensive by nature but can be in instances like the ones that have been mentioned.

An interesting question though: Has a wolf whistle ever resulted in two people getting together in some way, shape or form?

I dont really mind it, but I find it amusing that a guy will only wolf whistle when he has an audience, ie his mates. he will NEVER do it when he's alone.

its like when your out walking and a car drives by and the guy starts hooting his horn. he's never alone. he always has his mates with him.

    interesting much?? nah.

I find it embarrassing. I've been known to walk the long way back from town to avoid it. I agree with Ginnyjo, it's upsetting and alot of the time intimidating.

I know it says more about the guy doing it rather than the girl being targetted but I'd rather not be the recipient. I would like to be able to walk around without being noticed. If someone likes what they see, good for them. They don't need to let the rest of the world know and mortify me in the process.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,264 ✭✭✭✭jester77

It's a compliment, albeit a bit crude, but it's better than having a bunch of lads shouting, "would you look at the head on that" at you!

I thinks the above states the issue clearly.

Perhaps some women find it a morale boost but I suspect they are in the minority.
Either way, if some women find they have to alter their lifestyles to avoid the wolf whistle then it is best to avoid the practice.

Ah its all a bit of fun.. I think being offended is taking it all a bit seriously, its not as if they guys would even necessarily recognise you again!

Everyone has their own opinion, but when you've been followed through town by a bunch of drunken stags whistling and shouting stuff at you, you tend not to enjoy it.

Its not as if it's socially acceptable for girls to call out "Nice package" after random blokes.

    Mongoose?
