Depends what your looking for :)

Power metal - Hansi Kursch (Blind Guardian) or Kai Hansen (Gammaray)
Death grunt - Niels from Prostitute Disfigurement
Great mix - Pasi Koskinen (Was in Amorphis), or Mikael Stanne (Dark Tranquility, and the origional Hammerfall lineup)

There are so many amazing singers about in metal it would be impossible to get a complete list to under 20 names.

All down to the style of the music as Pugsley said but my personal favourite is Mikael Akerfeldt from Opeth, He has such a great balance of clean vocals and death grunts.

Bruce Dickinson without a doubt best Metal singer. So good it is almost impossible to find a good cover band for the group.

+1 for Mike. Had/has a great range and have you listened to Mr Bungle? What the unholy mothercopulator is going on there!? He did the sound effects for the "creature" in that xbox game The Darkness.

A few more would be Phil Anselmo. His voice is gravelly-silk (yeah, that doesn't really make sense, but really it does............no, it does!).

    Maynard from Tool
John Gallagher from Dying Fetus for guttural tones.
Bruce Dickinson without a doubt. So good it is almost impossible to find a good cover band for the group.

Check out an irish band called Celtic Legacy, their new singer used to be in a Maiden cover band. His voice is EXACTLY like Dickinsons.

What is it about his voice thats so good? I'm asking a genuine question here because I honestly don't get the appeal.

As others have said that's a hugely open question which is shown by the variety of responses. Three of my favourites are Angela Gossow from Arch Enemy, Burton C. Bell from Fear Factory and Anders Fridén from In Flames. Angela can deliver a demonic scream that sends shivers down my spine and Burton and Anders are excellent examples of singers that have superb delivery whether singing clean or screaming.

Roger Daltry power and passion plus the ability to imbue emotional depth into Petes lyrics (whihc can be obtuse at times).

    Mike.

What is it about his voice thats so good? I'm asking a genuine question here because I honestly don't get the appeal.

==>Maiden's first singer, Paul D'Annio, had a completely different voice- it was raspy and more punk-like; I think his voice suited their music at the time, and he's a better metal singer.
I think because their music is very epic and majestic Dickinson's voice is seen to complement the music- I have to say that I'm a big maiden fan but one of the reason's I prefer early maiden is the singing. Sometimes Dickinson's singing is a bit over the top. But he is, technically, a very good singer.
Listen to their 1st two albums ('Iron Maiden' and 'Killers') if you don't like Dickinson's voice.

Sometimes a singer mightn't be great but his voice suits the music. Ozzy in Black Sabbath for instance. Ian Curtis of Joy division and Henry Rollins in Black Flag and solo career.

All singers who weren't technically brilliant, but whose voice suited the music perfectly.

I'm glad Roger Daltrey was mentioned for rock.

I'd also throw in David Byron (Uriah Heep), and for metal, Geoff Tate from Queensryche.

Chino from Deftones has another great all rounder of a voice too.

James Hetfield, he has / had a great all rounder too and you'd spot his voice anywhere.

Good Screamer / Shouter - J R Hayes (Pig Destroyer)

    So too is John Arch.

    And James Rivera

I've only discovered him recently in Riot, Tony Moore

    Plenty of others too.

I'm pretty surprised he hasn't been mentioned, but Chuck Billy of Testament anyone? Has to be one of the best without a doubt. What a voice.

After that i'd say Russ Anderson of Forbidden

    Joey Belladona of Anthrax

    David White/Godfrey of Heathen

As much as i love Mike Patton as a vocalist i wouldn't throw him in as best rock/metal singer, there's a bit more to him then just that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,519 ✭✭✭Oral Slang

Think someone might have mentioned Chuck Billy, but I forgot to mention him.. Definitely up with the best..
Oh & I hate Bruce Dickinsons vocals. Like Maiden, but can't abide Bruce. Was delighted when he left & gutted when he came back!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,169 ✭✭✭rednik

I remember buying Iron Maiden when it came out and thought it was brilliant and to this day it is still one of the best debut albums. Paul Dianno was more of a punk singer but fitted well on the first album.
Nobody has mentioned the great poser that is David Coverdale, the man has a great voice and when Whitesnake were at their best he was a great leader.
Ronnie James Dio is another,he has had a great career and has made some great albums with Rainbow,Dio and Black Sabbath.
David Lee Roth is another great showman with a great voice. I bought their debut album ( Van Halen that is ) and is another I would rate as a great album.
John Wetton of Asia and King Crimson another great voice.

Before I continue I would like to say how its a bit unfair no female vocalists have been mentioned, so heres a few good ones: Delores O’Riordan (The Cranberries), Tori Amos and Bjork. All great singers who deserve a mention. I know he’s not a rock singer, but didn’t Louis Armstrong have the coolest voice ever?

I’ve given you my favourites, heres my list of shame-

No. 1: Sebastian Bach (Skid mark, I mean, Skid row): I wasn’t fully aware of his complete lack of talent until I saw that stupid ‘supergroup’ programme. A bad opera singer is the best way to describe him.

No. 2: The Bloke out of ‘yes’: Not necessarily a bad singer- but because he pronounced his lyrics clearly you could hear him describe metaphorical journey’s up the side of mountains and all sorts of stupid crap. After a while you just wanted him to shut up.

No. 3: Liam Gallagher (Oasis): Dear god, at what point did nasal singing become popular- although who would sound good with oasis backing them?

No. 4: Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth): In the beginning she would just shout weird slogans and do weird talking routines (she must have known she couldn’t sing). But then she started singing and she is terrible at it- maybe I’m being unfair because she’s not the main vocalist, but still.

No. 5: Cliff Richard : Now I know its easy to take a pop at sir D1ck but he has an utterly lifeless and uninspiring voice. His song ‘Devil Woman’ is damn cool, but it could have been so much better with a good singer on it.
