    right guys,

i'm trying to attach a silencer to my rifle but there is a stupid flash hider in the way held in place by a (frankly ridiculous) 1mm hex screw(or the type normally loosened by allen keys). all of the hardware stores i have tried have so far laughed at me, so can anyone here tell me where i can get something to loosen this?

    thanks guys

You should be able to pick up a complete set of Allen keys in any Maplin store. I got a set there that had ones small enough to fit the very small grub screws on AEG's.

got a complete set of metric/imperial allen keys in homebase last week for about a tenner, always handy to have around.

does it include a 1mm one? i just went shopping there and the smallest key i could find in the set is 1.5mm (i hope that will fit my flash hider hex, does anyone know what size they normally are on a JG?)

I got a set of precision ones in maplin, think they only cost about €7 or €8 and they go all the way down to 0.7mm...

just get a bit of wire to fit the hole and jam it in there a couple of mil and that will unscrew it for you.

the flash hider on my M4 needs 1.5mm allen key for that grub screw.

i got a cheapo set in woodies and it does the job.

happy enough with the looks, but for anyone even thinking about buying a silencer for the purposes of quietening things down - don't waste your money it doesn't make one bit of difference

it can make a huge difference depending on the gun and the silencer., what silencer did you get? ive used the stubby from ehobby, the stubby from eirsoft and the troy from same and all with good results.,

they are never going to suppress the sound in a great way as the sound comes from the gearboxes and most aeg's are not sealed so the sound doesnt just come out of the barrel.

Actually some silencers do make them quieter but its the gearbox thats the loud part

To put it simply, most of the silencers in airsoft don't do a whole lot except look mean, and balance out the piece.
However the higher end ones do 'diffuse' the sound coming out of the front end of the barrel.
And that is where most of the sound comes from. - It makes sense I suppose, as it's the only part open directly to the environment. - So what difference does that make?

Well, it may not drop the volume of sound much, but it does drop the frequency. In short, it turns a sharp 'Crack' into a dull 'Thud'.
It makes it more difficult to pinpoint exactly where the shot comes from. Not impossible, just not as easy.
