Hello, I am making up a business plan to open a type of DVD rental outlet in Ireland, does anyone know the laws regarding renting or showing movies or who I should get onto regarding licensing? I mean is it the government, the movie studios or both? Also, any ideas on where to buy or permanently rent bulk orders of DVD’s?
    Cheers folks!

tbh its probably the worst type of busines you could possibly go into today. Its dead in teh water, when is the last time you seen a new xtravision or chartbusters open?

Torrenting movies is the way its gone, that or go to the cinema. I personally have not rented a movie in about 4 years and we used do it weekly.

That's right, I think the way to go would be offering movies online for download while we wait for the higher speeds to happen in ireland. There always will be a need for movie shops and music shops make sure you do your home work as to where and the size of your maket in 5 years

    Really Bingo,

I would be a completely insane business to invest in unless it was structured for online as its primary market. It is all about the developing market and mp4, download etc is the way forward. Moviestar.ie is a brilliant business model yet could easily be run from a farm shed 10 miles from a local village! High street trading in DVD's is gone

I understand the clamour for online downloads but there is still clearly a problem with broadband availability in Ireland and even when you have it the speed is poor compared to other countries.

Don't forget there are many people around who are more than happy to rent dvds in their physical form and who have never had any need or desire to use the internet. It's easy to forget that this demographic still exists as the world moves on to more advanced techs and gadgets.

I believe there is still a market for physical dvd rental in some form but it all comes down to location. Best of luck with your idea.

PS, after a little research i came up with a Galway company Porto Media who have invented a download 'station' that transfers full size movies onto a usb drive for viewing on your TV/laptop. These stations are presumably going to be located in supermarkets etc. So these are probably coming down the line to compete in your market...

Just to echo the negativity regarding DVD rentals, the market is dying. In the last couple of months I've purchased a lot of DVDs up the North for next to nothing and often times for a little more than the cost of renting same. For example last weekend I purchased American Gangster for 5 pounds in Asda. No more than the Internet / Call Shops there's SFA to be made in one product alone. Chartbusters have been providing sunbeds / photocopying for years and where has it got them? Liquidation.

There maybe a small market but it's not sustainable in the long term.

Xtravision recognized the downward trend in renting films a few years back.
Now they are more of an electronic store and sell expensive products like ipods and a PS3.

5.25 euro to rent a film when you can buy it for around 8-10 euro is robbery.
Give a few year and xtravision will have less and less store space dedicated to renting films.

Nowadays, I either go to the cinema or torrent a film. Haven't rented a film in a long time but I buy lots in Newry or over the internet

    snap!

i just yesterday found an old wallet i hadnt seen in abt 4 yrs and it was full of video store rental cards for chartbusters, xtrrravison, laser etc

i laughed at the thought of using one of those cards now to go and rent a movie....and then return it!

    like the hassle involved.............

Nah torrents are 2 years ago's news! It's rapidshare now! :p

OP explore other avenues. I haven't rented a movie in 4 or 5 years! None of my friends do either.
