How do I put myself out there? I have started to upload a few shots but so far I have a paltry one contact(s). Spamming myself basically;

I found after added a few hundred people from a teenage group people have started adding me as contacts might be a good idea

Added. Go searching photos you like and leave comments , add people you like. Some people are against adding photos to groups.. I'm not, sure alot of the comments you will get will just be the group icon, but every so often you will get a genuine and decent comment...

I get no flickr action, but im not sure if i really want to be pimping myself out to masses of groups, adding people i dont know etc,
i'd rather one contact who was interested in my work than 25 who just added me to boost numbers
(not saying paul is doing that here, i mean in relation some flickr practices)

Definately take the time to tag your photos accurately - people searching for something that they match will find them a hell of a lot easier then.

I added ya too! (Im http://www.flickr.com/photos/shutr/ by the way!) I hardly ever add people as a contact, Im picky that way, but I like your shots so far


Flickr is a mad place, if you don't do anything, you generally get nothing back, even if your shots are better than most stuff on there, but then such is life, youve got to network to get your work out there, (personally I see nothing wrong with it!)

Taking the time to comment and crtique other peoples work is a great thing, and adding it to good groups, and I think in the beginning you kind of have to give in and add to the comment-based groups, just cause most groups noone actually checks the pools,

I know I used to add to all those score-me/rate-me groups, but then my pictures were crap- I had to force people! :P

I'm going to have to disagree with a few people here though,I'm not a great fan of these "add 1 photo,comment on 3" groups.I don't mean to cause offence to anyone but the only reason people are commenting on shots in the groups are because they're forced to...Nearly all the posts are meaningless renditions of the logo.I find regional/topical groups much better.The photo is seen by those who are interested in the subject and no one is forced to comment on your shot,they'll only do it out of free will.Granted my flickr is fairly unviewed and empty but I'd rather it to trying to pimp it as Mellor describes.

Inibaz- Completely agree, but I don't think anyone is under the allusion its anything more! And I think when you start, its a way to get people to simply see your stream. You just need someone to click on your icon, and then the standard of your work is whats important, the actual comments from those groups should be recognised as what they are, but if you get a few contact adds from entering those groups, then I think that says something else,

Though having said that, some people just add anyone as a contact, thats true, I dont know, I havent added to a comment/score based group in maybe a year, and I do cringe at them, but I think they helped me a lot when I started and they definately have their place in the flickrverse!

For meaningful comments (if such exist...) then you need contacts that view your work because they like it, but you need to do something in the beginning to get those contacts!

To be honest I wouldn't worry too much about it. People will find your stuff over time if you tag it right. I use Flickr mostly to share photos with friends & family or to post stuff to boards like this for C&C.
