User Profile not loading

    Acer Aspire 3000
    Win XP

Profile not loading on laptop, gets to background image after the login and just stays there. I can CTRL+ALT+Delete and go to Task Manager and open new tasks from there but cant seem to get to the account manager to create a new profile (if thats what the cause is)

Haven't logged in as Admin on this laptop before, so cant confirm if it is definitely the profile or not.

    Any ideas?

was the explorer.exe process running when you checked task manager?

Edit: Is it a personal or business laptop???

Yeah, and about 4-5 svchost, one of them taking up the most memory when sorted by memory. Nothing out of the ordinary.

If its a laptop on a work network do you use a roaming profile?
    If not ignore that bit.

What happens if you log off and back on - i dont mean powering off
    just logging off

Also you should have a go with the admin account and go to the c:\doc's and settings folder
and have a look at the folders there to see if folder for the account in question is ok
and that it isnt changed to something like username.bak or similar

Actually haven't tried logging off, will give that a go first.

I have tried logging off/on ... still the same.

I tried to go to safe mode and it wont load up, can see safe mode in 4 corners, and version of XP etc up the top in white, but black screen. That was for the admin account and the user account.

Boot to safe mode with dos and ran chkdsk and it completed, rebooted and still the same.

Is it a problem with the profile. Not 100% about the admin account as it wasn't used before. Would like to setup a new profile to eliminate that first. Anyone know how to run the account manager in XP for task manager -> new task .... whats the name of the account manager exe or is it that simple?

nusrmgr.cpl form the task manager will bring that up for you

might be worth trying to bring up ur antivirus from there if u can and running a scan just in case
