Ages ago i picked up an electric violin (yes i love dylan) off thomann on a whim, but never really put any effort into learning it. Has anyone here taught themselves how to play violin? i assumed i'd be ok cos i've been playing guitar years and have a decent ear, but obviously i was wrong!

    I started violin before guitar.

I would advise going for 1-2 lessons to gather where the notes are and how to use the bow. The bow is the trickiest part tbh!

A few years ago I picked up my granddad's old violin, armed only with the knowledge that the strings are tuned a 5th up from each other (meaning I could tune them quickly by ear, relative to one another), but I gave up pretty soon as I became frustrated with the technique. As Homer Simpson once said, "If something's too hard to do, it's not worth doing". :P

As a guitarist, I'm sure you'll have no problem figuring out the notes, but as I'm sure many violin players are going to tell you, lessons are the only way.
