Do any of you know the legality of carrying children as pillions?
I remember years ago asking a Garda and he said it was all down to having a helmet that fits?

This was asked before on this very forum. ..

I believe the official answer was: "It's legal if they can touch the foot rests and they have a helmet that fits".

The unofficial answer was "Bikes are too dangerous for kids".

Personally I do not like carrying kids unless its in a side car. They have no road sense and are totally helpless in the case of an accident. I have seen one idiot at a bike rally in the west popping wheelies with his kid on the back, If he had been caught by the cops he would have been done for reckless endangerment.

I'm looking at the odd collection from school as a novelty etc....I live in the stix so not much traffic....plus I've outgrown the drive fast stage!

Then go for it but make sure the child has all the protection imaginable (obviously). I give my 7 year old nephew short rides sometimes but only for the laugh, at the week-end, where there's no traffic...

I have been taking my daughter on my bike for over a year now, she is 9. She has probably done 3 or 4 thousand miles at this stage.

Make sure you get the right kit. Do not get a small or an extra small adult lid, get a proper kid lid. Not teahing my grandmother to suck eggs or anything, but make sure they also have decent jacket, trousers, boots and gloves.

And of course, teach them to leave the turning to you. I know they sometimes get a bit enthusiastic about leaning when it comes to corners. :D

You're right there! My nephew pulls me with his left hand for left-hand turns and vice versa! Funny... :)
