My brother is just doing the leaving, he is only 17 and wants to eventually join the guards so he is going to college first, he has been advised to do legal studies in letterkenny but he has recently only seen the course in waterford it, criminal justice which is much more apealing to him, nevertheless he is really only going to do which ever course might help him get into the guards eventually. lives in sligo so letterkenny is closer, but the course in waterford seems a bit more interesting to him and looks to be more geared towards the guards. i havent a clue about any of these courses so i dont know how to advise him and dont know anybody who has done the criminal justice course before. any advice or reccomendations appreciated. all my bro is intrested in is guards, politics and history as reguards his future

I didnt think the guards took any notice of what course you undertook when applying for the Guards? You might want to look into the requirements to becoming a Guard instead of thinking getting a degree in legal studies / criminal justice will get him in :)

I think the best thing to do with regards to questions about getting into the guards is asking on the Emergency Services Recruitment Forum located here. Any questions regarding the courses in specific can be asked here and anybody who can answer will :)

i have just finished 4yrs doing legal studies and I know of at least five people who have gone into the guards after doing their degree however I dont think you need to have studied either one to get into the guards a girl I started with in first year failed first year and now is a guard dont think it matters he might as well go with what interests him.

A degree in anything will help you get into the gaurds. He should do a course he will enjoy.

My girlfriend has just finished her 4th year in legal studies. She told me that a lot of people done the first 2 years of legal studies and then went to the guards. The reason they done legal studies first is because you get alot more money starting off when you get into the guards.

Clearly this is too late to help your brother considering the CAO hotline closed today, but i am doing legal studies cause i want to be a guard

the requirements are PASS YOUR LEAVING CERT, be it normal or LCA and be fluent in a European language, ie. English.

3 great reasons to have a degree when joining the guards is

    A. Mo money mo money mo moNEy!!!!!!! between 5 to 7k on the average starting wage,

    B. They are more likely to receive a promotion with the guards

    C. In templemore, a 2 year course in legal studies is crammed into 6months!! If you fail anything in templemore you are allowed 1 repeat. A course will stand to you

    sorry for my rant,
