Anyone know if there's any truth to the rumour that Machu Picchu may be closed to tourists to prevent further damage to the site? I've googled it but can't find any decent information.

It gets talked about in the Press over there in the same way people talk about one day closing Newgrange to tourists. I wouldn't worry about it. They will probably further reduce the number of permits they issue to people who want to trek the Inca trail though.

They don't seem all that interested in preserving it to be honest.
They once took a part of it away to make space for a helicopter landing pad. They only put it back when UNSECO started makubg a fuss. In fairness, they do have lads out weeding the place every day, and they close it every February to let the grass grow. It's such a money spinner in a poor country that I really don't think you have to worry about it closing any time soon.
