    Hi All,
Would appreciate some help with a TLP 4000C charger. Got one recently from EHobby after seeing how good they were at The Gathering.

If I discharge and fast charge a battery here is what happens. I turn the ampage down to around 1.5 mark. I attach the battery and the slow led starts to flash and the unit beeps. I press the mode button I think 3 times maybe 2 and the unit switches to DISC and the led comes on. After about 15 min the unit switches to SLOW, starts to beep and then to FAST. It stays on fast for about 30 min and then goes to slow and starts to beep. At this point I reckon the battery is fully charged. Am I right?

The battery is a large type 8.4v 1500 mah NiCD and is on the charger set at 400mah. This seems very fast for such a big battery or am I doing it wrong.
    Thanks All,
    Martin.

I should do a quick guide to these...

What you're doing is putting it onto a cycle. I think its called "conditioning". The charger is discharging and recharging the battery, I think it does each 3 times.

What you want to do is fast charge them, slow is really an trickel and the battery definitely will not last long. When you plug the charger in, it goes to red, powered. Connect the batt and greed will light up along with the beeping(annoying!), this is trickle. Hit the button once, it'll turn to fast charge(Blue, may flash. Fan starts). When its done it'll go back to green and beep. Discharge is the same but with orange and you have to hit the button twice.

    Hope this helps,
    Simon

    Thanks Simon.
Two more questions, is it NiCD or NiMH batteries that do not need to be discharged befor charging? Would I be right in saying that the 1500mah battery could be put on a charge of around 3 amps?
    Thanks again,
    Martin.

    Nimh's - DO NOT.
NiCD's - Do (Well supposedly, I'm not sure if anyone has actually proved if they have a memory effect, I've used Nicd's before with out discharging them and they've been fine)

You can use whatever power you want to charge it, you could use 5, and it'll be the quickest but you won't get as much power/mah into the battery as you could with it say set at 0.5.

Setting it at 5 would normally lower it's lifespan as well I would assume.

Dex is the residident expert on this kinda stuff (he's an engineer:P) and I use NiMH so I dont bother with discharge.

Charging at 5 would cause a lot of heat, and thats never a good sign. I charge my 1400s at 2.25-2.5 and they fully charge in about 35/40 mins. Think Keith does his at about 2. I wouldn't go higher than 3 amps for 1500s.

This is a way better set of instructions then what came with the unit. Thanks to all.
