Good to see, with our player pool stretched, I'm not sure how competitive a team we can put out, but it certainly adds a tier which allows players part of the international setup.

Anyone know the squad, information is very scarce?

I think we had TO'Leary, Neil Ronan and Ian Humphreys back in 2005

If the likes of Kenya can be competitive, so can we...lets get stuck in there, sevens encourages the development of the running and handling skills we desperately need especially in our 2nd and back rowers, guys like Crane and Haskell in England have benefitted massively from it....Anyone who saw Qera in the loose for Gloucs in yesterdays GP play off can't be in any doubt as to the value of 7's in bringing players on and developing awareness of space...

If these horrendous ELV's are to be imposed on us (and it looks damn near inevitable), these are the kind of skills and players we'll need to stay competitive...

Its great to see at the very least cos the 7s are a great spectacle to watch and will be so much better with Irish involvement.

No as it runs at the same time as the ML, HEC etc There is World 7's series that is played all around the world, best teams are generally NZ, Fiji, Samoa, England and S Africa. Totally different game to 15's but great to play - you really have fit mind!!
Ireland had a 7's team in the Kinsale 7's that lost in the final to an english team.

Great news. Can't have a world cup without Ireland. Personally, not really sure it adds much to skills of players in terms of 15's game but in NZ it has been a great place to blood players who are slightly below super 14 level. It gives younger guys a taste of the demands at international level.

There was a IRFU team at the Kinsale 7's tournament. Called themselves IRFU cresents. Were pretty good. Won the senoir mens comp the first day and came 2nd in the sunday comp. Pretty professional looking team, had all the physios and team manager people like the other pro touring teams

7's is a great way to improve a player's open-play skill set. It is a game that demands an appreciation of space, a capacity to keep the ball alive and high fitness levels. All of which really add to the skills of players in the 15's game.

Just to dig this up - http://www.irishrugby.ie/283_12295.php
The Ireland 7s team ran out 24 - 0 winners over hosts Poland in the FIRA-AER qualifying tournament in Sopot over the weekend.

This is stage two of the Euopean 7s circuit and the result keeps Ireland firmly on course to qualify following their narrow defeat to Wales in the Stage 1 final in Odense two weeks ago.

Ireland dominated their pool winning four out of four matches. They ran out 47 - winners over Denmark in their opening game and then racked up 40 unanswered points against Hungary and Lithuania before beating Sweden 21 - 0 to ensure top spot.

In the semi final Ireland beat the Netherlands, second in Pool 2, by a convincing 32 - 0.

The final against Poland saw the two unbeaten teams go head to head after Poland had knocked out Sweden in the other semi final. Ireland's 24 - 0 win means they notched up a total of 204 points over the weekend.

Next up for the 7s squad is a trip to Hanover on the weekend of July 12th and 13th. The top 5 teams from this qualifier will earn a place in the IRB World 7s in Dubai.

Ireland Sevens Squad (Sopot tournament, Poland.):

    Richard Briggs (Esher)
    Kieran Campbell (Dungannon/Ulster)
    Darren Cave (Belfast Harlequins/Ulster)
    James Coughlan (Dolphin/Munster)
    Chris Henry (Malone/Ulster)
    Ian Keatley (Clontarf/Leinster)
    Seamus Mallon (Ballymena/Ulster)
    Andrew Maxwell (Edinburgh)
    Conor McPhillips (Galwegians/Connacht)
    Brian Tuohy (Cornish Pirates)

Lots of Ulster players on the squad? Also, why the hell were they wearing the '03 world cup kit!?

Perhaps because in an (entirely justifiable) act of stalinist type mind/thought control the IRFU have decided that the current (imo, awful) strip is indelibly associated with the '07 RWC shambles and should be excised from history....;)

bit unfair to unleash proffessional players on these 2nd tier teams

But we need the pro players to qualify for the proper 7's tournie in Dubai, which I think is the last round in the championships?

Not sure what way the season works, I caught the highlights yesterday of the proper tour, with the games held in Twickers. Some very ropey teams in there like Wales and Scotland.

I'm sure we could mix it up with them and the likes of Kenya.

Just a quick update on the 7's squad.

This weekend they play in the Hannover Sevens tournament which is the last leg of the qualifying series for next years Sevens World Cup in Dubai.

We won the last tournament without even conceding :)
Ireland are in Pool B alongside Wales, Italy, Ukraine, Poland and Belgium. Top seeds Portugal are in Pool A with Spain, Russia, Romania, Georgia and host country Germany
    - http://www.irishrugby.ie/283_12679.php

Our squad is back to full strength with the Churchill Cup lads back in action, with some real talent in there with Earls, Keatley, Cave and Touhy mixed with experienced players like Kieran Campbell.

    Squad - http://www.hannover-sevens.de/index.php?mnu=1312
    Cian Aherne (UCD/Leinster)
    Richard Briggs (Esher)
    Kieran Campbell (club tbc/Connacht)
    Darren Cave (Belfast Harlequins/Ulster)
    James Coughlan (Dolphin/Munster)
    Keith Earls (Garryowen/Munster)

Scotland and Wales are pretty good at 7s actually and Kenya are very good. We wouldn't have it easy against these teams as they take it a lot more seriously than us, evidenced by their continued participation in the 7s tour

I've seen the Kenyan's play, and they're decent, but no reason why we can't have a good sevens team.

Especially as we're putting in Pro players against some amateur squads.

The top 2 from each group go through, so that's what we're aiming for this weekend.

Would love to watch it, not sure if it's on TV anywhere.

Cian Aherne is probably the best open field runner in the team. He is ridiculously quick.

Conrgats to the sevens team, they've guaranteed themselves a place in next year's Sevens competition in Dubai..can only be good for the game and the development of players in Ireland...Hopefully this will lead to the 7's game been taken more seriously here....

Great news simply on the basis that it's great to see the skills of 7s rugby will be available to our international side eventually.

Its only in the olympics in 2014 I think,so we wont know for a while.

What can be said is that people predicting teams dont understand 7's,you need fast ****ers which we have very few.You cant just throw in half the backs from the Ireland union team.

Felix Jones is the only player fast enough,Tommy Bowe could make a good fist aswell. The rest are too slow,we have a few fowards that would be good though, ferris and heaslip.

He's gone back to UL/Boh's, probably looking for a Munster contract, his brother was on the bench for Munster last weekend, iirc.

Brian Carney, where are you? :p

7s doesn't suit the style of player we tend to produce annoyingly.

wow is Keith Earls really getting a shot in 7s?? That's class!! I'd love us to have a good 7s team, shame one or two other of his calibar aren't selected too.

Not certain on either, i was told Cian Aherne was back with Boh's and I was told his younger brother Finbar was in the Munster squad last weekend, Finbar got a few A games with Munster last year.

That's an old squad from a while back, the 7's RWC squad was different.
