Family (wifes side) is in next week from the US, we are having a family reunion and renting a castle down in Tipp. I hope to get the tap and a few kegs. Some real beer drinkers coming in, although they are used to muck like Bud light etc.

I wish I had one of these for the last week. Just back from hols and now off the beer :(

if there are some real beer drinkers comin in get a proper keg and cooler and tap, proper beer for a decent price!

By proper do you mean a full sized Keg system? Would that not cost a lot more??
Im getting it for me as much them. Be handy thing to have.
I can always order some better beer kegs for the future, not enough time to order for the reunion.

Pity Guinness does not have a 5L keg.

well you could rent the proper equipment for about 100 euro then get full kegs of what ever you want for about 90 (approx 98 pints in a keg depending on how good a bar person you are)

so if you are thinking youll be drinkin alot of beer this may work out cheaper!

Hi If you are interested in hiring, have used these guys a couple of times...http://www.brewcrew.ie/
Always happy, I have no affiliation with them.
They don't deliver outside Dublin but they had no problem with me bringing the equip to Roscommon myself.

Do you not need Gas and all sorts of stuff to get Beer out of a normal keg? Last time i looked a normal bar tap (nothing else) cost over €100 alone and thats before any of the connectors and gas etc.

Grames have you a link or anything to where you can get a full bar tap kit/chiller etc for €100?

I have found some decent priced kits from the US. You need to get a tank of Co2 or mixed co2/nitrogen from a local supplier.
    http://www.kegworks.com/product.php?productid=16958&source=linkshare&siteID=gn.FG8iuCcw-qo2Dxzr1Z9Gd0wbIM14NOw&cat=425&source=linkshare&

Looks good. There is a Guinness kit too :D
I do not have the space on my Bar for a big keg/cooler and tap system so i think i will just get the mini system. some day, if i get a bigger house and build a proper bar i can install taps.

i'd recommend www.homekegs.ie found em very good when i used em last year. price includes taps, cooler, gas etc

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,264 ✭✭✭✭jester77

€14.99 is a bit expensive for those kegs

Anyways, those taps are a bit of a rip off, not every keg fits into so you are stuck to a few particular types of beer... and then they charge you more for the kegs compared to a normal 5L keg.

Just something to look out for, I done plenty of research into this last Summer :D

Mrs Spider's brother has a shed made into a bar in his garden. He gets kegs from the pub just round the corner. He has all the taps, pipes, and gas, as well as optics for de wimmins drinks! It's great at Xmas, I can have a proper pint on xmas day!

BTW why oh why do your pubs shut on xmas day? I used to love the tradition of putting on the dinner, going to the pub and having a good laugh at the dodgy presents everyone got when I was in the UK.

Shame I say! :( Anyway 100 quid is a bit pricey I think, I tried those botburger and heineken kegs and they spurt out a fair bit of froth, so you have to let it settle, by which time it's gone flat! Also you tend to get a bit of liquid trapped in the spout, so I first turned it up so it wouldn't drip. Bad move, I got some sludgy stuff out next time I used it! So I put a small whiskey glass under the spout to catch the drips.

Yeah im totally not convinced on these! i know the novelty would wear off after the first few kegs so id rather save a bit and put something proper together myself!

a shed converted into a bar!!!! you know this is something ive wanted for years but you know id never sleep at night thinking some slippery scumball would have at it at 4 in the morning, i couldnt take that sort of heartbreak

Well i picked one up along with 4 kegs. I will open it up at the castle tomorrow and give it a go.
When done i will see if it fits on my Bar. I have it in the kitchen. Its a good quality Garden bar that folds closed. Open its just the right size, has lots of drinks holders and drawers int he back. I varnished its so its excellent inside and put lights in it.
Its not big enough to fit a 35/50 litre Keg/cooler, gas cyclinder and tap but it should be fine for the table top one i got.

I found two places that sell em. Home Brew Company. and CO2 Cartridges .

Home brew company is an Irish company and the CO2 Cartridges in an English company, decided to go with CO2 cartridges in the end as they were cheaper. About 22 euro for 10 cartridges shipped and all. So ordered some there today. Hope to have them sometime next week. Can let ye know how I get on!?!

Anyone know if theres a heineken keg adaptor for these? Or if theres an online ship that sells some of the kegs!?

I will have to bring my one back. The tap lever broke off? Must have been a bad one. Its not an unknown German brand, its Morphy Richards which is a brand i have heard of.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,381 ✭✭✭oblivious

I have heard of some else have trouble with the cooling system!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,389 ✭✭✭✭Saruman

I got my replacement box. Almost no questions asked. So i got my 3 co2 cannisters again :D This one works perfectly and pulls a perfect pint.

jester77 how is €15 expensive for 5l of beer? thats about 17 pints of beer for €15. What am i missing?

Maybe I'm just not used to Irish prices. I pay around €6 for a 5L keg!

Hey everyone. In Lidl a few hours ago and saw it there. Very impressed. Gonna get one next time I am there. Did pick up some of that lovely Excelsior, mmmm. Wasn't too pleased there was no Perlenbacher there, really like that stuff. Peace.

Oops just noticed you are in Hamburg :D Of course you would pay much less for beer than we would. €15 for about 17 pints is a bargain here :D

There are cheap flights to Hamburg with that German company that looks like a taxi, have been thinking of going some time for a weekend as it looks like a lovely city. I have only been in Dresden before and absolutely loved it.

We were hungry and we went in search for food and could not find a restaurant anywhere. finally we went to the bridge near the lovely cathedral/church and i could smell food so i followed my nose and low and behold, a whole street of restaurants!! Trust the Germans to be so efficient as to put all their restaurants down one cool street. We ate at an excellent Australian restaurant and some Irish chick was singing inside.

There are just under 9 pints in 5 litres, not 17.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,389 ✭✭✭✭Saruman

Yes i figured i had worked it out wrong as my keg is empty and there was no way i had 17 pints :D So its not as good value as i thought since you can get more for your money getting cans! I guess its the novelty of pulling your own and also keeping it chilled without taking up fridge space.

But don't you see double when you're drunk? ;)

*I know double would be 18 pints, but you have to allow for evaporation!

Oh there's also a special on at the mo, .75 litre bottles of Bulmers at €2.50 a pop. A pint and a half of bulmers for €2.50 sounds good to me.

    *hic*

Where is that special? are you saying Bulmers 750ml bottles are 50c?

See what happens when you post after a few bottles of bulmers :D But head down to Lidl tomorrow and get them for 2.50, if you're into that kind of thing of course.

    *hic* :D:D

Jester77 where can you in Germany get 5L kegs for €6? Are these local brews or is that what lidl/aldi charges? I can not find anything for less than €20 on German websites as i was hoping to order some :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51 ✭✭thejem

i've only got the 5l mini keg of heineken before. has to be chilled for about 10 hours before using it to make sure the pressure is ok for pouring, and by then it is chilled!!

My neighbour got the tap in lidl. it only suits certain kegs but he found a lot of frought/head coming out, found it hard to adjust the gas to pour reasonably.

I saw some of them in my local Rewe at the weekend for €5.90, don't know what the brand was though, probably a local brew. The more mainstream beers like Becks and Franziskaner were around €8 or €9. I don't bother with the kegs as they are expensive compared to buying a crate of the same beer, for €12 you can get 10L of Becks or Franziskaner, but there are much nicer beers than those that don't come in the kegs.

Edit: The taxi flights are HLX, but unfortunately they stopped the Dub-Ham service 2 years ago, only Aer Lingus operating on it now

Warsteiner is on a special this week for €7, near the end of leaflet.

Warsteiner in Lidl, I keep seeing that beer and keep forgetting to get it. I love the name. Is it good? Lidl really do have an excellent selection of beers. Excelsior, Perlenbacher, Fink Brau (I like it). They also stock Bass aswell.
