A+ and Network+ for hardware/network troubleshooting, Mcdst(microsoft desktop support technician, Mcp291-292) for software would get your foot in the door for any 2nd desktop support role. You would still need a good level of knowledge to get the job. You can braindump all those exams in 1 night if you wanted to. Check out testking.com for paid for braindumps.

MOS(Microsoft Office specialist) is a possibility, as 2nd level you will still get stupid questions to do with Office and 1st Level support seem to be getting worse so expect a lot of it.

Starting salary, you would be lucky to get 25-26k a year. 2 or 3 years experience and you can look for 30-33 if your good but that's where it would cap out in most company's without a level of progression to harder work(Server/Storage engineer).

If you can, I would talk your way into a MCSA. Then blag your way into a good job.
