Advice on Science Jobs/Careers

    Hey Folks,

I've just graduated with a degree in bio-analysis and have been looking for a job in the field or for that matter anything that might get me on a stepping stone.

Unfortunately there doesn't appear to be much out there :(

I've tried the usual places, graduates programs, monster.ie, jobs.ie etc... but looking for something that I can start my career off in, ie. lab work, clinical data work etc etc...

The usual places aren't turning up anything but jobs that need 1 to 2 years experience which is a bit difficult to go for when can't even find a starter... :)

Has anyone got any experience starting off with a science career in Ireland? Any hints/tips? Any idea where to start (am I on the right track)?

    Any advice would be appreciated!

where in the country are you?

i know there is some bio work available in cork but don't know what type of experience & qualifications they are looking for. pfizers were advertising for a lot of bio technicians in last fridays examiner as well as other positions check out their website - which is not that easy either, google 'pfizers ireland' after the page loads( give it a min) you will see 4 circle's - click on 'work with pfizer' next page select 'shanbally biotechnology facility', next page select 'view job vacancies' and scroll through the jobs - maybe if you got a start as a biotechnician you could get some good experince.
also schering-plough in cork recruit for bio positions now and then check them out too. it depends on where you live and whether or not you're prepared to travel for work.

    best of luck.

Don't most science grads get a post graduate qualification?

Would you consider doing an MSc or Ph.D?

    Hey there,

Quintiles, East Point Business Park, Fairview, Dublin (right near Clontarf Dart station) is a clinical trials services company which takes on ALOT of science diploma/degree holders. They employ about 350, and though the work is all office based, it is science based. You'll get your experience in a science job and could then move into your field after a year?

There were a good many master degree holders in biochem there when I worked there as, like you (and me at the time), they couldn't get in to their chosen fields due to a lack of experience.

Google them to find out more?

    Hope this helps!

Do a bit of research on which relevant companies are in the area and check their websites for vacancies. Some of the bigger ones don't use job boards at all.

Have you spoken to your college Careers Service? They might have some idea of where previous grads might have gone.

    Good luck!
