Every time you see a shot of coaching staff in the stands with a laptop its a Mac, always without fail it's a mac, I wonder why that is ?

I noticed Wales used a video analyst this year for the first time former player I think. Used a mac aswell u might be on to something! What other teams have used it??

Could be something to do with certain software thats being used. Perhaps its to do with the direct feed from the broadcasters and certain programs?

The video analysis software they use is Mac based, I cant remember for the life of me the name of it now, I'll find out on Monday.

A friend did video analysis with the Mac for the Ospreys and WRU. He showed me the software, its very cool.

Obviously as a mac fanatic, its a no-brainer! ;)But most of the analysis software is available on both platforms as far as I know...

not clued in fully as to why but I imagine it's because the mac's are more media friendly in terms of running video software? I notice in college that all our audio visual students tend to use macs also. maybe Junior can tell us why?

    edit* he already did!

absolute legend, as a sports science student writing this on my mac, i was pretty interested as to what it might be

    nice one!

No worries man, I know how they use it although I'm no expert on it. Luckily I don't have to support it yet, they have a support contract with the OEM Software crowd for that, but I do look after the Macs etc

Macs are more stable at running software like that for some reason, and also alot of programmes aren't available on PC. Its the only thing macs are good for i think ;)

running software is all they are good for? isnt that all they need to be good for?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 160 ✭✭chicoben

    Well yeah........

The reason macs are used is that they handle video editing applications far better than windows based computers,it the way the operating system is designed.

Personaly I think its the only thing they are good for:)

yeah, same reason they all have them in NCAD.

Yeah, well clearly Macs represent Leinster and PCs Munster (although I don't like Macs, but somehow putting them the other way round didn't sound right!).

    1) Apple give free mac's to anyone who may be on TV or who may give them publicity. Offically these mac's are on loan for tax reasons...I would assume at least some of their mac's would be on said loan. We got them at a previous job I had, and we 'forgot' to send them back and eventually sold them :)

    2) I dont work in that industry, but *everyone* I know, personally, who works in graphics or video uses a mac. So I assume a mac is better with that kinda thing.

    :D

Yeah Macs are way more suited to fancy, creative applications and looking treny but the PC is better to do the basic house hold budget.........

A computer post on the rugby forum, what next ? the softness of Leinster jersey material compared to Munster......:D

Fair play to the old Anti-Munster instinct coming out even though you reckoned Apple would represent Leinster. Apple's European HQ is in Cork and they have been making them down there for years and would be ten a penny! :D

Apple would be the market leader for graphics. Power is relatively easy now, but back 10 years ago PCs (with their 36/48 or whatever of RAM) wouldn't have been able to open a graphics file, let alone do anything with it. Applications like Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Quark Xpress etc. were all developed first of all for the Mac (and still are fairly unstable on PCs). Other thing is that apple always had very good quality screens which would be very important.

As the owner of a Powerbook and an Apple Mini, I would never want to go back to a PC again, even if it would save me a few bob.

I personally think Macs represent Munster (solid, reliable and consistently perform, and in my opinion- a bit of passion) while PCs well are Leinster (can work really well, and then flake out, but somewhat lacking in real spark, however in the grahics arena they do excel). Now I know I won't be banned from this RuggieBear as I am only offering an opinion on the anthropomorphic association of Mac vs PC and certain rugby sides, this can hardly count as flaming. And If I am to be banned will it be as mac fanboy or a Munster supporter.

i'll have to think about which to ban you for...

+1 I switched to mac as vista was the straw that broke the camels back. I seem to be more productive on the mac. I suppose I am not worrying about viruses, spyware, bloatware etc.

Just read the stuff about sportscode really interesting, a lot of Irish clients but surprisingly no GAA contracts.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,186 ✭✭✭✭Sangre

this forum needs a mac user mod to as its becoming way too biased.

Very tru but im sure someone would have to be pretty good with the sportscode software,I doubt its easy to learn and with the GAA being non paid,I cant see an average joe doing it and I cant see someone who has experience doing it without being paid.

As a soon to be computer science graduate (oh four years, what have i done with my life) and having just sat an exam on computer vision, something like sportscode really interests me.

In fact, one of my questions today was on mapping information from a camera from a tennis game to a top down view of player location - wonder how possible it would be for a rugby match :P would be great in place of radio and live feeds.

From what I remember off the top of the head, the license costs around 15k

There is some GAA software here. Not the same detail or match-tracking as Sportscode but its a great effort.
