Does Ireland's weather depress you?

I never thought I was that into hot weather, but just recently I'm getting pissed of with it being May and cold and rainy. Gets one down a bit.
Would be nice to live somewhere where you could step out and never be cold, even if you did have to deal with a little excessive heat for some of the year.

Do you work for survey company?

Depends. Winter can be good when you are all cosy in bed with someone else. Summer does improve my mood but it brings out the knacks in their manky t-shirts smelling of stale sweat.

After the last couple of weeks, that;s probably the worst timing I've seen in a while ...!

But generally speaking, yes. It does. More so the amount of dull grey cloud you get over an average summer.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

No, cause I'm 10,000 kms west of ye thinking about sunbathing on the beach this Saturday afternoon. A bit warm at 32C, but the breeze off the Pacific cools you off, as does the water.

I'll tell you what depresses me; driving up and down to work the last fortnight in cloudless skies with the thermometer showing mid 70s, spending 8 hours of the day working inside glimpsing the sun on breaks, getting home that evening mainly too tired to go and do sh*t and then both saturdays in a row of otherwise perfect weather, it's f*cking cloudy and looking increasingly like rain.
I mean WTF is up with that?

We have the perfect climate for clear skies...when we do get them it never gets so hot that you can't go out in it...having lived in 2 very hot places (that are hot even when the sun isn't shining or it's night time) I love Irelands weather...it's just this murphy's law bullsh*t about when we actually get the good weather that pisses me the hell off...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,005 ✭✭✭Creature

No I like the rain. I never was much of a fan of hot weather though a bit of sun every now and then aint too bad.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,024 ✭✭✭Redpunto

yeh, it p*sses me right off, was thinkin of getting one of those UV lights that give ya your daily dose of "sunshine". Feel like a bit of twat though sitting with your face in front of a blue light:D

It's one of the reasons that I don't live in Ireland. Having better weather means doing more things outside, being able to plan BBQs and such weeks in advance, and generally lifting peoples moods.
Though if you move elsewhere there'll alwasy be something thaat you'll miss from homea and maybe more so than the weather.

The weather at the moment is amazing, couldn't ask for better in this country, dunno where you are but this May's weather in Dublin anyway has been fantastic... here's hoping it holds up throughout the summer!

I always see Ireland as existing ( weather-wise ) to break up the clouds coming in over the Atlantic for the rest of Europe, thus doing them a large favour. And the west of Ireland kinda breaks them up for the east.

The weather here is crap if truth be known. Ive lived in the South Island of New Zealand for a year and they truly get to see all the seasons- solid warm summers, real autumns with incredible colours and then winters where its just as cold as Ireland but they have the joys of proper snow, then they go and strap carbon fiber to their feet and go flying down mountains. Canada and many parts of the States are the same, as is the French/Italian Alps. Ireland just gets depressing greyish weather than seems to make most of the population drown their sorrows.

Though it could be worse, I spent a winter in Finland once, less than 4 hours daylight around Xmas which might explain them having the highest suicide rate in Europe:(

No. Weather here is good, its not too cold or hot, the damn rain when it comes and the gales that come with it are quite cool :)

Despite suppose popular opinion, alot of people do like the Irish weather.

not at all, i love the face that the weather here is so varied, id hate it if it was really hot here all the time, plus running around naked inthe rain is one of my main hobbies, if there wasno rain id have nothing to do!

Weather here is far from varied. Varied is having a range from -7 to -10c in the winter and +25 to 35c in the summer. We just hover around mediocrity.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,485 ✭✭✭Thrill

That may be true, but it's varied by the change of the seasons. It's not hot all year round or cold all year round.

Yes, Irelands' weather does depress me.

But, given the negatives associated with "better" weather/location I'm quite happy.

    ie:

    No Earthquakes
    No Cyclones
    No Tornadoes

    Etc...

I'm abroad for a few months, clear sky, above 30 c everyday. But I really miss Irish weather. The sky is so bright that it nearly blinds you and I didn't see rain for 10 weeks. Was so glad it rained , really missed that.

And our days in Ireland are much longer during the summer, here it gets dark at 7.30-8.00 at night -so there is not loads of time in the evening to do things after work.

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 35,731 Mod ✭✭✭✭pickarooney

Apparently the weather is nice there now as opposed to the ****e we've had all May here, so that's a bit depressing. Worse, forecast is for low-teen drizzle when I go over there next week.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,211 ✭✭✭Royale with Cheese

I'm not a fan of hot weather, but contrary to popular opinion the weather ain't been so great here as of late. Yeah it's been sunny but always fairly cool + somewhat windy. In the shade it's just been outright cold. Had to turn the heating on today.

Considering it's almost summer it's starting to piss me off that we (in Dublin anyway) have hardly had any genuinely warm days since the sunshine began, and you know that in July + August when it would be warmer, it'll just piss rain non stop for 2 months. I'd find it extremely tough in somewhere actually hot. I hate not being able to walk 5 minutes down to the shops without sweating your ass off.

I love that, Scotland was like that. Cool summer nights were so long.

    I like Irish weather.

I'm comparing it to Canada where temperatures range from -40 Celsius to + 40 Celsius in my province.

    Pros to Ireland weather:
    - no mosquitos; though I've heard they're here somewhere
    - I haven't seen a blackfly yet
    - No temperature extremes
    - No potholes on the road that can swallow a bear
    - Being able to walk outside and stay warm; even if raining
    - Not having to hide inside on a gorgeous day because it's +40Celsius.
    - No Tornado's
    - No Hurricanes?
    - No Earthquakes

The only thing I find worse than having to stay inside because it's dull and rainy outside. Is having to stay inside because its Sunny and too hot where your skin will burn in less than 20 minutes.

    Cons to Ireland weather:
    - Hearing people complain about it. Its the only thing that makes a day depressing.
    - Kids go nuts because they can't play in the yard because the grounds too wet. But this is same as having to stay inside because it's too hot.

In the end I like the control I have over my comfort.

Its much easier to warm yourself up then to cool yourself down.
Which is why I preferred Winter to Summer in Canada.

But we'll see in a few years if I hold the same opinion....time will tell.

I think the weather has been great this month,I have a sun tan so I am not complaining :D There is no better place in the world when it is hot in Ireland and everyone is cheerful.
I hope the sun stays for the summer not like last year where it rained for weeks non stop.

It is never 'hot' in Ireland. 23 or so degrees is luke warm.

Let's call a spade a spade, the weather is crappy for about 10/11 months of the year and even when it does pick up you can't plan anything because there's a strong chance it'll just piss down again.

It's 21 degrees here at the moment and I'm wearing a jumper, although I did get sunburnt yesterday playing football. Some winter!

Agreed with the murphys law bs. The weather isn't ideal, but at least we aren't prone to natural disasters. But its the unpredictability of the weather that pisses me off, since you can't plan anything more than 2 days away, and even then, its risky.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 30,661 Mod ✭✭✭✭Faith

Yes, it pisses me off. I find that the rain and grey skies and all that depress me, and put me in a bad mood. When I was in California last year, I was hardly ever in a bad mood. I'd look forward to walking to work every day because the weather was perfect - warm, but with a cooling breeze. If you lay down to sunbathe, it was roasting, but the minute you got up to walk somewhere, it was nice and cool again.

I moved rooms towards the end of the summer, to one that had blinds. When I woke up and it was dull, I immediately felt myself getting down and not wanting to get up. Thankfully I realised that it was just because the blinds were drawn, and it was actually gorgeous outside.

I'm not a fan of being too hot, but California was perfect (except LA). Ireland (in particular Cork) gets really fúcking humid in the summer and it's very uncomfortable. Edinburgh is gorgeous when the sun shines, but never gets above about 22 degrees. On the flip side, it never gets properly cold in winter either. I'd love hot summers and cold winters.

Fine by Irish/UK standards he means maybe?

By my judgement last weekends weather was barely ok. 18°C-23°C, showers, cloud. Most of my family were delighted with the weather but I was a little disappointed really as I was only back for the 3 days.

It does kinda, because we never get a good side of anything...

Summer isn't warm and nice, here the sun just plain burns you and gives you head strokes.

I'm a lover of cold weather and rains, but moisture here is really awful.

In winter all we get is rain, no nice snow or anything.

But what really ticks me off is the wind I HATE wind.

    Faith,

If you like hot summers and cold winters then Canada is it for you.
Head to the western provinces of Alberta or B.C. for drier air.
The Easter provinces are more humid.

Both those provinces are a drive away from California too.

    Cheers

Irelands weather only annoys me because we generally don't get proper summers nor proper winters.

I'd define a proper summer as little rain, a lot of sun etc and proper winters as snow.

We get a bit of sun during the summer, but over the past few years the weather has been just alright most of the summer with a few patches of gorgeous weather. I'd like snowy winters, yet all we get is wind and rain, which I really dislike.

Overall it's quite tolerable weather though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,905 ✭✭✭Rob_l

Being an irish person I desgined perfectly for our moderate climate and so no it doesn't depress me.

Also I am quite fond of the rain a strange trait which has the added bonus of upsetting random people who see me smiling while out in the rain while they go about as if their whole family has just died, their sadness further cheers me:cool::cool:

Sometimes when it's cold and rainy i do get depressed about Ireland's weather but then i remember that it could be worse, we could be in a place where we're frequented with Tornados, Hurricanes, Snow Storms, Tsunamis and Earthquakes(Although Earthquakes aren'y tecnically caused by weather) but it's just nice knowing that we're pretty out of the way of devastating weather

it absolutely SUCKS. You can't do anything. The weather and the amount of scumbags in Ireland are the two things that make me never want to go home. Last summer was the best ever, fishing, swimming, surfing, no jackets, shorts, bbqs, beers, it's heaven.

I lived in Alberta for a year and although they get nice summers, for 6 months it was f*cking FREEZING. We had -30c for 2 weeks in March. I would rather the sh*tty irish climate than having to put up with those temperatures. I nearly died a couple of times because I had to walk home after missing my bus!

well so far ive been fishing since march (trout opening season), havent worn a jacket in about a month, went swimming last week in a lake, had about 4 bbqs so far this summer, loads of beers here, the only thing i havent done is surfing (dude), as for the scumbags.. outta my hands unfortunately! up ireland!

I would love a bit of cold and rain right now! Sitting in my apartment and it feels like it's about 40 degrees!! I'm on the top floor aswell!! All the windows are open but it's not really helping much.

Winter is interesting here, has anyone ever walked to work in -45 degrees?? It's not particularly pleasant, especially when you can't feel your head, i think there was one point this past winter where the city i live in was the coldest place on the planet. Nice!

Depends on what you're used to though. If it was constantly 20 degrees or so, then 23 degrees wouldn't be hot......temperatures being the way they are in Ireland though, I think people are entitled to call 23 degrees hot!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,909 ✭✭✭✭Wertz

    23C hot?
No-one anywhere on the planet is entitled to call it hot until the ambient temperature is approaching that of the core body temperature (~37C)...up until that point the body still has the ability to cool itself without external influence. Anyone that complains about it being "hot" at 23C is a whinging c*nt tbh...

Bank holidays should be declared in Ireland as soon as a warm front approaches. :D Lucky those in foreign climes who are guaranteed the seasons and can plan ahead. Ireland is a beautiful country in all seasons, on the plus side all our shores would have been bought up years ago as were islands off the coasts by G*****s in the 70tes. Surely the islands belong to Ireland and imo should never have been sold off as part of our heritage.
