good luck in trying to fix a laptop mobo! you would find it next to impossible to get a circuit diagram, best bet is ebay for a new mobo imo.

Define "Dead". Had some one tell me their laptops motherboard was fried, dead ,completely beyond repair. Turns out Dell had told them replace their dying hard drive , which they did...but he didn't format it,nor install an OS on it (hey he was told only to replace it...not any of the "after that" information) , so they "assumed" the motherboard was dead when it would boot to a blank flashing cursor.
    Anyways Motherboard repair, ha!

    It's possible.

Could litrerally be a loose pin somewhere, or a buggered capacitor. It is possible to repai a motherboard. But only if something has obviously failed or fallen out.

It'll certainly cost you nothing to try. You could save yourself the price of a new computer in the process.

If it's not obvious though, good luck trying to find the cause. And there's no way a human being could read a motherboard circuit diagram.

You might be better off in the end buying a new machine entirely.

Thanks for all the replies. I will keep trying at this moment to fix it.
The laptop was dropped and the harddrive was damaged. I have replaced this. Also the batteries where dead (cmos & power pack) I have replaced these. I found also a burnt out transistor which I suspect is draging down one of the voltage rails. Thats why I need the schematic.
If all fails I can get another MB on ebay. I only paid 80 euro for the laptop so its worth repairing.

    honestly? no, it isnt.

you paid 80 for the lappy but how mucch have you spent on repairs so far? I'm guessing the Power pack and the HDD cost around the 150 mark.

But if i assume correctly if you know how to work with circuitry and have the tools ready sure give it a crack.

I've said it before and I'd say it again - try contacting Dell online. They'll be able to get back to you with some piece of useful information; theyre support is superb in my experiences, and I have never owned a dell :p
