I have eircom 2 mbps broadband. I am only getting a speed of about 32 kbps when I am downloading somethimes it can go to 100 kpbs but that would only last a few secs. This can't be right! Is there anythin that I can do? I am connecting it to my laptop wirelessly. Would this be a problem?

What is your line attenuation and SNR Ratio? Could either be a very dodgy line or something interfering with the wireless

The max you would be getting on a 2mb connection would be 200kbps. Assuming your stats are okay it is most likely the server you are downloading from.

Where are you downloading from? Is it torrents?

    Do a speed test.

Okay I did the speed test there, should be getting 1.71 kbps. Yeah I am downloading torrents, legal ones. Is there anyway to make it go that bit quicker?

Torrents have wide speed varience, it all depends on how many people are sharing the file fully compared to the ones still downloading (more sharers and less downloaders=higher speed generally), that speed test result would be normal for a 2meg connection

What router are you using? Can you get the stats from your router and post them here, the SR and Line Attenuation, upstream and downstream

You'll probably need to port forward on your router. Who's your isp? It sounds like your being throttled.

    Try http://portforward.com/

Do you think there is any point if you are been throttled by the isp ?

I am with eircom. I am using the router that I got with my bb, it is a netopia one. So it's fairly old. How would I port forward my router? I am at work at the mo, so I will put up my line details and that later when I am at home.
