Can I get a refund for bad haircut??

Had my hair cut last week and it's really badly done. .. Of course she took loads more off than I asked but one side is longer than the other. The longer side wasn't layered either so is much thicker and fuller!! The back is a bit dodgey aswell with little bits left longer than the rest and you can see the blunt cuts. IYKWIM. It's just really badly cut.

I rang to speak to the manager to tell her I wasn't happy but she wasn't overly helpful and not a word of apology, but she said to come back in. I was a bit stuck for times and of course wanted it done asap so next week was no good. She said come in at 10.30 Saturday "but you might have to wait" I said I'd no time to wait so am going in at 8.45 this morning. But am having second thoughts about letting the same person loose on whats left of my hair so have decided not to let her do any more damage and ask for a refund instead so I can go somewhere else to get it fixed properly.

Do you think I'm within my rights to ask for a full refund?

    Opinions appreciated! :)

By all means ask for a refund.

I say this like it's easy to do :( I've had two really bad haircuts in my life and the only one I ever had the nerve to get my money back for was when I had my mammy there for moral support :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,753 ✭✭✭sudzs

    Thanks for the reply Xiney!

Unfortunately I went back in and due to being extremely strapped for time this coming week I had no alternative but to let her fix it up. However she went at me with vengence with the scissors. At one stage I had to put my hands up to stop her cutting parts of it. i'm really upset about it now and am going to have a cup of tea before phoning the manager again but to be honest I dont think I'll get much satisifation. Can you offer any further advice?? I'm caught half way between boiling anger and tears at the moment.

you poor thing, dont let the same company do it again for you , if the manager was any good she would of making sure you were happy the second time round, by all means ask for a refund , and never go there again. If its a big chain of hairdresser, go further and make a complaint about the manager, if she isnt helpful this time.

Theres noting worse than getting a bad haircut, i once go a boys cut into my hair by accident, and im a girl!! i was only 6, so i didnt know any different ha!.

that's maddening OP:mad: i have no good advice only never visit there again, never recommend that salon to anyone(and more;)).. i'd cut my losses, hang out for a better day. let us know what the manager says and gl

Thanks for the replies. I feel it was my own faut for letting the same eejit at my hair a second time, but like I say, I am stuck for time at the moment. Going to ring the manager now and I'l let ye know what she says but she was so unhelpful the first time I doupt I'll get anywhere.

And no, its not in a chain...

editing to say... just rang and she's busy so is ringing me back. Oh God!!!

you go for it. If you had a complaint about a stylist, why did the manager let the "stylist" near you again?! I hope you get a refund!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 261 ✭✭golden gal

I got a really bad haircut in Peter Mark before and I went back to them but they offered me a different stylist and she did a much better job. You have a very valid complaint and do not let the manager be rude to you. They wrecked YOUR hair so its their fault. Its really hard to find a hairdresser you trust. How did the hairdresser treat you when you went in for a second cut?

I had a dreadful experience with a hairdressers about a year ago and refused to pay for the butchering. They went nuts but I pointed out that I had repeatedly told the so called stylist I didn't want much cut off my hair, that I didn't want to go any darker and yet she carried on.
When she was eventually finished and did the whole "ta da" with the mirror and "isn't it lovely" at the end I was so annoyed I simply said "no its awful". You could have heard a pin drop in the salon. I explained myself again and she said "sorry about that. Your bill is X". I told her that I wasn't going to pay. She hadn't listened to me once, totally disregarded what I had asked her to do and not to do and that there was no way on earth I was paying for the privilege.

Needless to say I never went back and I don't think they want a client who actually tells them what she thinks of their "styling".
OP I think you should make an appointment to see the manager, explain how unhappy you were both times and that unless they make good the situation (as good as they can, won't make your hair grow faster) you will not be going to them again and you shall spread the word among friends and family. At the very least you should get a refund.

    Can I??

    Oh ok!

It's Monet's, Dublin Street, Dundalk Co. Louth.

(boards.ie, if this isn't allowed then tell me and I'll edit it, but please don't give out to me, I'm traumatised)

How did the hairdresser treat you when you went in for a second cut?

Oh god, she refused to acknowdelge there was anything wrong with the cut!

I pointed out the longer thicker side and she proceeded to pull at both sides simultaniously saying "no, they're even, they're even"

I said "no, look, they aren't even" (I actually measured them last night and one side was 3" and the other 2.2")

She seemed a pit pissed off that I was contradicting her and also because I had asked for someone else to sort it out, so she proceeded to hack my hair off. then when she was finished she reefed the gown off me and flounced off.

Oh I shouldn't have let her near me. I feel like sueing them now! And still waiting to hear from the manager.

Feel so sorry for you OP, there's nothing worse than a bad haircut, and the way you were treated on top of that is a joke!

2 years ago I had totally natural, black hair in great condition nearly down to my bum. I was bored though and decided I wanted highlights to liven it up. I went to a hairdresser and a worryingly young girl was assigned to me. I said I wanted chocolate and caramel highlights. The stupid girl did the highlights and they came out GINGER AND BLONDE! On black hair! It was awful. I was so shocked I didn't know what to say and paid. The cheeky cow even tried to charge me more than I had been quoted but I refused. I later found out that many people have had bad experiences there. It looked so bad that my mum went mental when she saw and dragged me to a different hairdresser to get it dyed back to normal. Obviously that dye job faded though and 2 years later I'm still trimming out the lighter bits. Due to having to cut off all the damage my once bum-length hair is now not much past my shoulders. I'll never get highlights again!

Speaking of being badly treated, once I went to a salon for a Brazilian wax. The woman said she was experienced in doing them, but when I arrived it turned out she didn't even know what it was. She used the wrong kind of wax, it was far too hot and burned me. She still ripped it off though, and ripped off my skin with it! I had a bleeding sore patch in a very sensitive place. She didn't think there was anything wrong with that though, and attempted to wax the rest but I told her to stop. I had to go to the doctor because it was so bad. I phoned the salon to complain and the manager just said, "So what do you want me to do about it?" I said, an apology would be a nice start, she said, "Well I'm sorry if YOU weren't happy with it." Needless to say, I wax myself now!

    Sudz,
firstly you have my sympathies! nothing worse than a bad haircut to wreck your day/week/month!

You are fully entitled to a refund, Hair salons offer a service and therefore are covered under the Sale of Goods and Supply of Services Act 1980, basically if you are unhappy with the service - its not what you asked for or were promised - you are entitled to some if not all of your money back- now you took the right action in allowing them a chance to make it right (although it turned out even worse). you have been more than reasonable so calmly ask for your money back, follow that up with a letter to the management naming the stylist if you can and stating why your unhappy, that you gave them a chance to fix it, and how much money you are looking for back ( also include all other names and dates of who and when you spoke to ppl), also indicate that you will take the matter to small claims court if you do not receive a satisfactory response.
Now I know you dont want to actually have to do the small calims thing but simply stating it will be enough!!

    best of luck!

    Thanks everyone for the replies!

Eventually the manager rang me back, around 5.30, and I went a little bit mental with her, didn't lose it though! ;)

I'm going in to see her next week for a refund and for her to look at the damage and she said she would reshape it for me if I wanted. I said "well there isn't really much left to reshape"

And get this... the wan that cut it said that I was very agressive!!!

FFS, she was the one wielding the scissors, doing an Edward Scissorhands impersonation!

    hey sudsz,
im a manager of a salon and if somebody isnt happy with their hair you either dont charge them or get somebody else to fix it!!
the samy stylist should never be allowed back to the client if the client has made a complaint!!

they may not give you a refund at all but i for one wouldnt let this so called manager near you!! if the stylist was rude to you second time around i would of hit her!!!

+1 To be honest I'd look for my money back and then find a decent salon to go to and get your hair fixed.

Take the refund and leg it. You'd be better off getting Stevie Wonder to cut you hair.

As lala said, if they dont give you the refund just take the hit and get it done somewhere else. Going in to the same salon a 3rd time after they ****'d it up twice already is a bad idea.

You poor thing. I got a haircut yesterday and wasn't sure what the girl was doing while she was cutting it, didn't seem like what I wanted, but it was actually great when it came out.

Make sure to tell all your friends never to visit this place, I'm sure word will get around.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 938 ✭✭✭chuci

feel so sorry for you op. had one bad experience in a hairdressers had really long hair so to get it cut i had to stand up as they wouldnt get it even if i wasnt or something. but my stylist got sick of bending to cut my hair (just wanted about2inches off it) so she hacked it off so id be able to sit down it was awful. i refused to pay and they all got in a strop but it wasnt what i wanted and i was entitled to not pay. but ya told everyone not to go there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,503 ✭✭✭✭jellie

definitely push for a refund but from your experience with this place it doesnt really sound wise to get them to try sort it out for you!

bit expensive but if theres one near you id recommend toni & guy, its worth the price. i went to 1 recently & they know all about what styles suit what faces & hair etc, & would hopefully make the most of whatever mess the other "stylist" has created.

you really shouldnt have let the same girl at your hair again!

I agree, I know your pushed for time but look at the situation your in now. Don't let them away with this.

Sometimes, I know its easier to walk away and think oh well I was done I just won't go back, but why should they get away with it. I would write a stinking letter to the manager demanding a full refund and that if you don't receive a reply within 7 days, you will contact the Gerry Ryan/Joe Duffy Show..

Sickener op, I feel so crap for you. :(
There's nothing bloody worse to wreck your mood!
Push for the refund, not sure about the 'reshaping' god knows what the hell they'd do.
    It'll grow out soon enough.
Honestly this is why I'm afraid to go to hairdressers sometimes.
Not all of them are like that, but not being listened to is scary!

Just to add, def agree with princess lala, a stylist who messed up your hair should never be allowed back to fix it. Her annoyance at being complained about clearly influenced your second session with her.

Yes, it actually happened me before in a Peter Marks and I was treated with kid gloves when I went back.

And there's no way I'll let the manager go near what's left of my hiar. but at least I'm getting my refund and a chance to tell the manager what sort of staff she has. Though I doupt it will have any impact on her as she was quite happy to imply it was all my own fault because I was agressive with the stylist.

    Stylist me arse!!!

Thanks again everyone for the help and support! :)

My god sorry to hear this...
If you find stylist and Manager are disgraceful - find out who actually owns the place, contact them and explain the whole situation.
Im horrified, for you, - that just sounds awful, further proof this countrys' hair salons need to be much better regulated.. So sorry to hear this, as a former hair stylist i find it hard to believe the stylist argued the point with you about lenghts when clearly it was significantly un-even.

Do not let it slide and be sure to tell the manager, salon owner that hte service has been so bad you will not hesitate to inform others... if they value their reputation at all they will try settle this with you. If they dont, then sing it from the rooftops!

Even IF you were agressive with the stylist youd have every right to be after she f*cked up your hair. certainly doesnt give her the right to f*ck it up further.

Apparently, a hairdresser is not allowed refuse to cut a child's hair if they go crazy because they are supposed to be trained to deal with kids and show them it's OK.

How can I get this confirmed?

And if it is confirmed, where can I complain?

    Thanks for any feedbacks. :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 62 ✭✭Beautybeanie

I cringe when I read about bad haircut stories - sure haven't we all had a situation where your locks have been butchered by some idiot who represents themselves as being qualified to do what you pay them to do?

Good for you for naming and shaming. Some salon owners concentrate on the bottom line and forget that it's customer service they should be focussing on and word of mouth they should be protecting.

Yes, they can refuse. They're hairdressers not childcare workers. I've asked parents to remove their children from my premises on occasion.

If a child is not sitting still or you feel they are going to cause a hazard (cut yourself or them) you can refuse to do it.
I also have often said "sorry, i cant do it" as they refuse to sit still or allow me to do the job at hand in any form of resonable time...

Anyway, if you do cut their hair while they are going mental, your gonna traumatise them! They will then always have issues in a hairdressers - and why would you do that to your child? Its just a bad idea for parents to do that i think.. Get them used to the idea - bring them to the same place each time, same stylist,, let them watch you getting your done etc.

The problem with most hair dressers is that they don't actually listen what you are trying to tell them, so go back and ask for your money back. you have every right to. good luck

    some of them i guess...
i had a sort of funny experience of the opposite..
I was to cut this ladys (very short ) Hair,
She had said she wanted literally 1/2 an inch all round off - especially the back as she wanted it to grow. Under no circumstances to take any more than that or she'd go nuts..
So i did exactly what she wanted. She waited til i had finshed cutting- and then said, i never had someone actually take off what i had asked. Can you cut off another 1/2 inch..

I was kinda like "i did what you asked" and am mad busy, and was kinda complimented in a odd way.... so its hard to win really

Sounds like she didn't really know what she wanted
