Just got a quote from a fella of 2k to clear site, dig out my foundations and backfill base with stone. The house is 2700 sq ft and the garage is 500 sq ft. Does this seem reasonable??

That's a very tough one to call, it depends on how much he has to dig out, how long he will be at it, what way you want him to leave the site, whether he has a roadway to make and how tough the digging will be.

I had a digger at my house for 7 days last october. Its about the same size as yours with a garage the same and it had a fair bit of digging cause it was into the side of a hill. He also dug a 400m roadway and levelled the stone on it and brought in a roller to roll it. Also included was a tractor and dump trailer for about 5 days. Total cost came to €3600 inc vat.

Well I think that is basically a price to clear the site, dig the foundation and backfill the base. He will be piling the earth on the site out of the way ( If it needs to be moved I can move it myself). No roadway is required as it is off an exising passage way.

2k is not particularly cheap. Diggers (e.g. 20 tonner) go for about €40 per hour (Thats what i was charged recently). 2 k means 50 hours work! Wonder will it take him that long ! It will depend on if he hits rock. Is there any rock, if so he/u will need a rock breakder and they are expensive i.e. €70 - €90 per hour.
Might be a better idea to do it on a per hour basis but watch him like a hawk as they all take the mick (they did with me as i wasn't in a position to keep a good eye on them!)
Try and figure out how good the ground is. Might be cheaper to do it by the hour. I always hate when tradesmen round things to the even thousand, it always makes me feel they are plucking prices from their heads
    Good luck

No. They don't all take the mick.
