Studio Meet-up

I wanted to dosome studio shots with a model for some time.
I have however never done this and wouldn't even know where studios are in Dublin, or how to get models.

Would anyone (preferable with some experience) be interested to make a little meet-up, with probably 3 or 4 people to do some studio shots?

Yeah, count me in. I'd love to do more studio work. I even have a few model contacts, that could be arranged.

You sort the studio and stuff, and I'll help in any way i can.

I would love to do this too, I haven't any experience though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,381 ✭✭✭✭Paulw

From experience, 3 would be a limit on photographers. Otherwise, it just gets too busy, especially with the flash and such.

I organised a session up north a while ago - City-Exile, Borderfox and myself. Had a laugh and some good photos too.

    Hi
just in case you might be interested, digital beginners (www.digitalbeginners.ie) do a Studio Taster Course - approx 4 hours in the afternoon - which is excellent. I did it back in Feb for about €60. There were 5 on the course and 1 model. Learnt all the basics - and they do studio rental also.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,747 ✭✭✭mdebets

Paulw do you have time in the evening?
This crowd The Light Exchange do a 60€ special at evenings from 18:15 to 21:15.
Let me know, what evening would suit you (I can every evening bare Thursday). I then go ahead and book them.
If you could then contact the models you know would be great.

I'd be interested in tagging along as well if there is a free slot left.

    Sorry qwertz,
but I have to bail out at the moment, as I don't have any time to organise anything. I'll try to organise something at the beginning of September.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,726 ✭✭✭qwertz

    No problem :)

If anybody else would like to share the work/organizing then I'd be willing to proceed with this.

Hey, just to dust the tumble weed off this one and revisit - not sure if it happened or not but a shout out to anyone that may be interested in a mini meet up for a studio session on a cost sharing basis.

The light exchange appears to be good value for a place to start for a studio - not sure about whats involved / use of their lighting setups / etc.

    Models? Anyone? folio32 perhaps?

It seems that previous experience of boards members suggests 3 photographers (4 at a squeeze maybe if the interest is there).

Where? Dublin Venue - The light exchange are strong contenders.
When? Early or late October maybe. (Sorry September is not going to be good for me)
Time? An evening to avail of the lowest rate available from the studio. 18:15 - 21:15 €60

Anyhow, just to throw it back out. Thoughts, suggestions, or ideas?

    Cheers.

same here. if there's a slot for future session, i'd be happy to join in.

btw, is flash gun a must for studio shot?

Pretty sure this didn't go ahead. I'm still very keen, but have no prior knowledge in the studio so can't be much help.

Not absolutely necessary but probably very useful i'd imagine.

From the light exchange's web site it appears that studio lighting is included - i don't know exactly what that means. I know some systems will be triggered from reaction to your internal flash / or flash gun. Others will trigger from a wired connection.

I know a few on boards have used the light exchange so perhaps they'd contribute their experience?

We could do a strobist type meet

I'd certainly be interested, if someone is organising. I've done a few studio shoots before, and always fun (depending on models).

I luv to get involved in a studio shoot. I haven't any experience in this type of setup but would like to get my hands dirty.

if you are renting a studio then they should provide the cable or wireless transmitters

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,200 ✭✭✭kensutz

Right those who declared an interest are as follows:

    mdebets ??
    PaulW
    kjt
    qwertz
    AnCatDubh
    kensutz
    mart_max
    pete4130
    Buzz

Seems there's enough for 2 individual groups to do a studio shoot or if anyone knows of a place to accommodate a large group.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,624 ✭✭✭✭Fajitas!

I'm not interested in going, but from a lot of experience working in the studio, I'd really recommend breaking it into at least 2 groups.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,381 ✭✭✭✭Paulw

With that number, I'd say more like 3 groups.

I'd have to agree with Paul and Al on numbers. The question is there enough people with experience to set up the sutdio. I have done set lighting for amature theather (sp) and done a bit of homemade studio work, but nothing that would equate to studio flash lighting with a model. However I'm sure some of my experience might come in useful somewhere.

We just need to sort out the groups so that each group has some person with a bit of experience (preferaby lots lol).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,624 ✭✭✭✭Fajitas!

Setting up the lights won't be too bad - I'm sure the staff there will be friendly. If someone brings their laptop, you'll be able to see all manors of different set ups (online) - Generally, get 1 or 2 set up right, and your fine - Simplicity works best in situations like this really.

The most important part will be getting what you want out of the model. Each group should get together beforehand and settle on whatever looks they want. This is important as three different people directing a model isn't going to work well for anyone. I've never really done the group thing before, but it might be worth only one camera shooting at a time, and the others assisting.

Whether you get an experienced or new model is up to you - Experienced models will mean it's that bit easier for you guys to get better photos, she'll know how to look her best, and have her poses, a new model may or may not. I'm not sure if you intend on doing TFCD/TFP or cash, but the model will want something out of it at the end of the day.

Thanks for the advice Fajitas. I always have the lappy on me anyways.

Would you mind explaining the initials TFCD/TFP.

    Time for *

    * being either prints or a CD of the images, generally so the model can add to her portfolio, especially handy if she's starting off :)

Hi, I'm the OP and would still be interested in joining, but still have the same problem as in May, as in that I don't rally have time to organize something, but would still tag along to a studio meeting.

With some notice I can get access to some studio time at a very good rate (free) It would have to be limited to a small number (per session) & as it would be booked in my name I would need to be there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,393 ✭✭✭AnCatDubh

I've been in contact with the Light Exchange people (they seem sound) and the story with the studio lighting system is that it is a Bowens professional lighting system with 4 lights and various lighting attachments including softboxes. At the moment they have a synch lead to trigger the lights. They are going to have a wireless transmitter soon but they can't say yet when they will have it.

The only issue is that for H&S reasons (understandable enough) they need someone with experience to operate / instruct in the systems use.

    They have helpfully offered 3 options to assist (and aren't a bit pushy towards any one);

    (a) if we know someone with experience and willing to do it then they can come along - assumes zero cost.
    (b) they can provide such an assistant - we would need to pay these people for their time and it would work out at 60 - 70 euro / half day or 120 - 150 euro for a full day.
    (c) if there is anyone in the group interested in learning about the studio system, they have training courses available, during 4 weeks of September or a single day in October. Their standard rate for these courses is €200.

As i say they weren't pushing towards spending more money with them, and were quite happy to bring our own.

    Further thoughts, discussion?

Also - has anyone any recent knowledge as to what the going rate for models would be or what to expect?

    Cheers.

I can get the use of a Studio with 4 Bowens Lights, Softboxes, Reflectors, Lightmeter & Backdrops for free. I have done the Studio Course & so can supervise the session. The gear is Professional Quality but the facility is Amateur only.

I am thinking of getting myself a remote trigger system & if I did then that can be used too. All we need is a subject/model.

I will need a bit of notice for the booking & to work out how many people are interested. Maybe a few sessions one weekend?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,624 ✭✭✭✭Fajitas!

There's only one way of doing this. Two teams, two studios, two bodies of images, only one winner.

    :D

I've just put my name down for a Studio Course in DCC which hopefully I'll get a place on, so then I'll be able to give give a decent dig out. Cabinsails offer is a great one and would be worth taking up on. We just need to sort out some models.

Maybe we can update this list to make sure everybody who is interested gets a spot. PM me if you want and I will post an updated list. Don't forget about your special skills (model contacts, familiarity with the lighting equipment...).

I think the DCC Studio would be OK for 3 at a time, so with that list it would be 3 groups.

I could probably book the Studio for a Saturday & we have about 2.5 hours per session. We would probably need a model for each session as it would be a big ask to have one person doing that much time.

Do count me in if there is more space.
it will be interesting to do studio shots. :)

    kjt
    AnCatDubh
    Dara Robinson
    mart_max

CabanSail (has experience with the studio equipment and is willing to supervise)

Myself & sineadw did a quick shoot last night at DCC. The models, both friends of Sinead's, said they would model for a Boards shoot.

We could book sessions for about 3 photographers at a time. There will not be a cost.

Hey - I'd love to do this also, please keep me in mind. Daytime weekend would be perfect may be able to on an evening also. No studio experience as yest.

    Hi Cabansail,

I missed you on Tuesday as I had to fly after the DCC meeting. I know we were all trying to get a session together for this month and its only a matter of tying down a date. Did Sinead and youself discuss any dates that might suit. The DCC venue would be a great one to get thing going.

    Cheers

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,393 ✭✭✭AnCatDubh

Assuming the date would suit, I'm still interested - how about a Saturday morning. That would clear the ground for people work wise????

This probably needs a final push folks. Some good offers in terms of studio availability and even models. Is it possible for those that have indicated they can assist in studio/models to get the heads together and pick a date and make it good to go? I kinda suspect that if an approach isn't taken soon then we'll still be here in a months time saying - yea, i'd be interested.

    Thanks.

Query: if the DCC is the venue do you need to be a member to join in?
