A mate got a windows smart phone for work. Its a bit bigger than he thought and wants to use his old phone but keep the smart phone.

His plan is to have 2 phones with the same sim card so that when he doesnt need the smart phone he has his old phone and vice versa.

    Is that possible?

I think he is on 3.

None of the Irish networks allow you to have 2 SIMs with the same number.

Ignoring that fact, technically is it possible?

Yes, some foreign networks support it.

Phonevolts seem to have a device that lets you clone your sim. Maybe give them a shout.

Because the networks don't allow it. I would guess it's because of the extra resources (infrastructure and money) it would require and potential security problems it might bring up.

It causes problems with paging (when someone tries to ring you), the network does not know where the phone is. It causes signalling issues, hence it was trialled & dropped by at least two networks.
