Web Based Project Management: Recommendations

    Hi all,

not quite sure if this is the appropriate forum for this so feel free to move/delete as appropriate.

I'm basically looking for a web based Project Management system and was wondering if anyone had experience of them, their strengths and weaknesses

The ones I've looked at so far have been Web Collab, Active Collab and BasecampHQ.

We have Webcollab up and running on a server here but the boss has told me he doesn't like it. Not what he doesn't like about it, but just that he doesn't like it, full stop! We also have Xplanner running, but it has already been dismissed as being awkward and unintuitive.

I'm not looking for much I know :o

But I suppose the below would be the criteria I'd be looking at.

    1. Free (if possible)
    2. Scalable
    3. Web based
    4. Easy on the eye, as in you don't need to go trawling through several pages to get all info on a particular project.
    5. Auto produce gantt charts or similar.
    6. Auto prioritise according to overdue dates or amount of dependant projects.

Cheers, and if this is inappropriate I apologise.

I was only asked about this by a friend of mine last night so heres a few possibilities

Heres a site with listings of PM software thats available.
    http://www.whybasecampsux.org/#alternatives

Activecollab went from being open to closed source last year sometime and got quite expensive at the time too. I would be wary of them on that basis.

An alternative to activecollab is this. Its an extension of the opensource version of activecollab.

    http://www.projectpier.org/

Probably not as functional as activecollab but it is free.

I did see some recommendations for copperproject but it is not opensource.

    http://www.copperproject.com/

Zoho also looks interesting but it might be a but generic. It also a subscription service. It looks like it does automatic gantt charts

    http://projects.zoho.com/jsp/home.jsp

I have heard of this also but not used it. Again a subscription service.

I am not sure how many of the opensource ones will meet your requirements for 5 and 6. I would be interested to hear if you come across any that meet this requirement.

    Good luck with it.

    Project on demand http://openproj.org/pod
pricier than basecamp, but does the gantt charts etc.

It's Java based and there's a free desktop version at the same site.

    Cheers lads,

I'll give them all a good look and get back with my musings on the subject.

    This is much appreciated.

If you want to look at SCRUM project management then I'd take a look at scrumworks.

If not then OpenProj is good and combined with JIRA or Mantis for Issue/Bug Tracking you have everything you need.

Look at the Groupware category - good list of choose from.

Two that I havent had a chance to look at are:
    http://studios.thoughtworks.com/mingle-project-intelligence/whats-new-in-mingle
    and
    http://lean-to.com/

Both of these are from excellent software companies so I'd say they're both pretty good.

Well I've gotten so many of them that it'll take a bit of time to go through them all. Then I'll have to put the one I pick on a test box, use it for a bit. Then put it on a production box and use it for a longer bit with the rest of the team in on the act.

As it is this is one of about 6 projects I have on at the moment so it's not getting my full attention so it'll be a while yet I'm afraid.

Genuine thanks for all the suggestions so far.

    Ronan.
