My first mac. My first impression.

    I bought a MBP on adverts 2 weeks ago. So far it's top class. I thought I'd share my first impressions on OS X and some of the features I like and things I miss from windows. Firstly OS X is excellent. It hasn't given me a single problem and I've been using it pretty heavy with a lot of digital audio and mulitasking. It seems very stable and looks great too. It boots up in a few seconds and once my password is entered the operations system is ready to go.... brilliant! Apart from being really fast an having no problems at all there are a few other things I really like;

    > It's ridiculously easy to install software.
    > The sound from the built in speakers are excellent for a lap top.
    > The track pad is good and I hate most track pads.
    > The dock looks lovely at the bottom of the screen.
    > I really like how application windows open to the correct size depending on
desktop items or your dock size. Simple but effective.

    There are a few things I don't like too;

    > There is no cut function. Just copy. It's awkward and time consuming
having to go back and erase copied files.
    > There's no delete key. Just a back space.
    > The machine gets very hot very quickly. But does cool down once the fans
    come on.
    > Only 2 USB. I know it's enough for most but with a USB mouse and one
audio interface connected you're pretty much screwed if you don't have a
    hub lying around.
    > No euro currency key.

All in all I'm really happy with my MBP and OS X. I don't think I'll buy a windows machine again.

Savage. I knew OS X should be able to do it but I just couldn't find it. Thanks.

    apple + x
Not for file management, which I think is what he means.

I THINK there's a keyboard shortcut to allow you to "cut" rather than just copy. Google Mac Keyboard shortcuts. Its something like Apple + Drag&Drop file, or Alt + D&D, something like that.

Yea, I need to cut for file management. It's not a big deal but It's just something I noticed.

Yeah, command-x won't work in the Finder. However you used to be able to enable it via the command line. I think OnyX can do it as well.

I got a macbook pro myself recently. I am absolutely delighted with it but have to admit I don't use it near to it's capabilities. I had a mac mini a few years back so the transition from windows has been fine.

I'm loving some of the new apps I've found:

    Adium
    Snap n Drag
    Transmission
    CoverSutra

Two things that slightly annoy me:

    1) Battery seems to last about 2 hours max

    2) When typing I often hit the touch pad and it changes the cursor so I end up typing back a few lines back. It's like the touch pad is too sensitive.

Really ? I've got one sitting here and I find I just end up using the touch pad more :D .. maybe if I wasn't using the keyboard on the MBP and had a blue tooth one I'd use the mighty mouse more

What's transmission like? I use BitRocket. It seems to be fine.

Normally use safari but there doesn't seem to be any difference

I think the best torrent client is the one that you like the most. I changed from Azerus to Transmission because of all the stories on how great it is. However, I don't use half the fancy features on it.

    It's still a great client.

My favourite program is Quicksilver. Its so much faster than spotlight at finding files etc..

I'm very impressed with my MBP which I've had for just over a year. I'm only sorry I didn't get a Mac Pro when I upgraded my home rig too.

No need to buy. Just peep into windoze-only applications, via MacOS, using the *FREE* xVM VirtualBox.
