We've all heard it at least once. Mammy calling her little boy/girl in Tesco but she's using names better suited to South Central L.A. than Santry.
    What's the best you've heard?

Keanu... Might have been Keano, but why would a mother call he own son by surname based nickname....?

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

Aleanbh. They basically took the Irish for 'The child' and made it her name. Man those relatives are butt-heads.

I heard someone shouting Princess at her daughter when she was giving out to the kid. So obviously not just a pet name as you would have assumed 10 years ago.

Was that really the spelling? The spelling of Portia sounds much the same.

Britney, Shakira and all the other celeb names that the scum have adopted.

What about famous people; Bob Geldof kids have all messed up names; Fifi Trixibelle, Pixie and Peaches Honeyblossom. Was he having a laugh when they were born?
My friend told me of a girl she knows called Nirvana. The girls mom is a hippie stuck in the grunge rock era. Funnily enough Nirvana herself is the exact opposite and would distance herself from anyone who would have anything to do with the band.

This one from that link bugs me
"Caitlin" isn't technically meant to be pronounced "Kate-Lynn." It is originally a Gaelic spelling for (Eng.) Kathleen or Colleen. But there's a ton of Caitlins around now, and their parents all pronounce it "Kate-Lynn."
Along with the English emasculation of Deirdre.
    Both equally silly names.

Deirdre was and is a girl's name. It can't be emasculated

In Sweden, you have to have the chosen name approved by the authorities to ensure no-one gets a stupid name. One Swedish couple wanted to name their daughter Metallica but the authorities would not allow it.

Kelly used a lads name (in America anyway), hope it hasn't happened in Ireland yet or god help the poor lad. :( McKenzie as a first name always annoyed me for some reason.

It also means to make something weaker or less effective , its meaning is emasculated, although it's usually more about ideas. I consider the English rendition of the name an emasculation.

I'm stretching it here just a wee bit. ;)

They'd want to be careful to keep their daughter away from the girl they've trapped in that pit of theirs.

Anything that gives there child a personality trait is really a bad name: Hope, Charity, Chastity, Joy etc.

Don't so much stupid as unfortunate - a couple by the name of Love named their son Gay...

It knows not to go near this pit, or else it gets a hose again.

I think it was Pratchett who wrote aboout a family with these girls: Hope had committed suicide, charity and chastity were in jail for theft/prostitution and joy turned out to be manic depressive...

not silly names as such but I did hear a mother calling Ross and Rachel on the beach a couple of years back

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,469 ✭✭✭guinnessdrinker

During the medieval period and maybe more recently there was a name "Fearfasta" which meant man of knowledge in Irish but I was reading a book where the author asked could you imagine a mother calling out "Fearfasta come in for your tea".

Yup there are loads of Ross and Rachels about, especially twins.

The name Chenise (Shenise?) seems to be very popular but I think it's a bit strange.
