Sister in Law has a 2002 - 1.6 Zafiera with 65k miles on it . Local mechanic said the engine is shot ! Anyone else hasve a similar problem with this type of engine!

Any idea on cost of replacement engines or would you bother ?

What actually happened to the engine? Did the mechanic explain to you(s) at all?

Still runs but very low compression ! Problem cylinders ?

    Is the Head Gasket gone?

Did he say why the compression has gone.

Shares the same engine as the Astra and no reported problems of this type.

Google astrasport and go to there tech forum for advice.

You will pick up a replacement engine VFM in Traynors in Armagh.

    Fuel pump could be knackered.

Some 1.4 and 1.6 engines that are used for short trips suffer from stuck valves from cold causing low compression on one cylinder. The ecu shuts down fuel to that cylinder causing poor running. when restarted warm this disappears until next cold start. Check that these are not the symptoms!!
Common problems on these engines are:
    Coil pack
    T-belt/w-pump failure ----bent valves
Head gasket failure water in oil/oil in water
