    I don't rate Solex carbs.

Are you looking for originality or will anything that might work better do?

If I recommend an alternative, it'll probably still need re-jetting to suit the engine. That'll add to be bill but will be better in the long run.

Hi mac, what would you recommend?I've got a Herald 1200 lump sitting in a 63 spitfire, need to sort out the distributor as well as the rev Counter wont connect to a distributor that was'nt designed for a rev counter

I'm not over familiar with the Triumph engines, but I do know of a few downdraught carbs that would probably work. I think the Solex B30 PSEI is similar to the Zenith 30IZ / IZE series as far as physical fit goes. I just wondering which way round the carb studs are on the manifold (studs along the car or across?) Also wondering how much space is around it.

What I had in mind was a Weber 32/34 ICH series. Very good carb and used to good effect on standard and tuned Reliant engines as a better performing substitute for the old Zenith 30IZ & IZE (or on later cars with the SU heated manifold adaptor removed). Another is the Dell'orto 32/34 FRD series. I couldn't say for certain what application would have the nearest jetting, so it would be best to get it set up properly by someone on a rolling road. You can be lucky sometimes and get something that'll work out-of-the-box, but it's always better to do it properly. If you know the choke size and all the jet sizes of the original Solex, I suppose that would be a good starting point.

Best suggestion for the rev counter would be get an electric Smiths RVC. I know they're not cheap to get hold of, but retaining a mechanical drive is too much hassle in my opinion. A Pertronix Ignitor is good, but if you can get a Lucas 45D4 distributor with the right advance curve for it, there is a cheap-as-chips electronic ignition unit available for those.

I've got a Triumph Workshop Manual from 1964 somewhere for the Herald / Vitesse & Spitfire 4. Next time I'm over in the UK I'll have to see if I can put my hands on it.

Are quite reasonable for secondhand parts if you're stuck.

No problems getting Solex carbs, but they're not great. Let me know if you still require any, I have a few in the garage in varying states of repair.
I've got a Weber downdraught carb bought off eBay but the biggest problem is going to be getting a manifold; they're like hen's teeth. Easiest solution for yourself is either to fit a pair of SUs from a 1200 Spitfire using the Spitfire Mk1 manifold, or else get a Stromberg adaptor which will enable you to fit the 13/60 Stromberg carb to the existing 1200 manifold and use it as a downdraught rather than a sidedraught. I have both these setups, twin SUs on an Alexander manifold on my 1200 Estate and the single Stromberg on my 1200 convertible. Most of these bits turn up on eBay.
The SUs require moving the fuel pipe but the Stromberg needs almost no modification at all and uses the 6J needle from the 13/60.
